'77 4-bolt 350sb.

Edit: whoops, put '77 instead of '79 which the year of the engine, sorry.
Almost affraid to ask... I got a shot at (what is claimed) a '77 350sb w/ 4-bolt main for $100. Guy swears up and down it has less than 5k on a rebuild but due to sitting for a while he suggested a complete gasket kit and... The bad news,it spun a main bearing from "running low on oil" (said his bro's fault). The engine is quite clean,I popped the vavle covers and the head guts looked clean and so did the exhaust ports and the entire engine was quite clean (not show room quality but not much grease outside). Swears a simple bearing swap is all thats needed cause the rebuild is so fresh... True? I know nothing about this kinda thing (hence this post).

I want to swap out my 2.8 so badly and will unless I land a V8 Fbody soon. Even if the swap doesnt happen I'd like to build a 350 that I can throw in to one when I get it.... Ya know? Now I got access to either of two T5's or a TH400 (want the stick instead) and rear ends galore so I figure now might be the time to rebuild my F-body since I already have a couple gas efficient daily driver. Long story short,Steven needs a fast car.

Any advice is grealy appreciated!

If it spun a main bearing, it needs to be align honed and the crank needs to be turned.

So this'll take a bit more than just sliding in new main bearings then... Hmm... Is that a costly procedure?

It's one of the more involved operations. It's been a while since I've had it done, so I can't recall off the top of my head what I've paid for it, though. Try calling some of your local machine shops.

$100 isn't a bad price for a 350 core.

It probably didn't "spin" the main bearing, but rather scored & scuffed it (and probably others). For some reason any bearing damaged is referred to as having "spun" a bearing, although actually spinning one is relatively rare. As long as the inserts didn't turn in the bearing cap & saddle, you're only looking at cleaning up the crank (depending upon the degree of damage), thorough cleaning of the block (meaning complete disassembly), new bearings and reassembly.

Re: '77 4-bolt 350sb.

So if nothing else,$100 isnt a bad price on a complete long block (with intake/carb/headers and all,he just wants it outta his shop and see it go to a good home). I figure at the least it would be a good engine to tear apart and learn on or something (steven = ultra n00b & ) but wanted to check with ya'll first. And the reason he didnt fix it was he had a 3 carb/327 waiting to go in.

Thanks!
