Swap TBI for a Crate???

I've got a 305 TBI, but what I really want is the GM Performance Parts "Fast Burn 385". What kind of trouble am I gonna get myself into or can it be done with a few modifications. My concern is that the engine is a crate, so it's basic in terms of electronics, there is none!, but what will I need to do in order to still power all the, what was once computer-controled, dash componentsand their sensors, sensor lights, etc, etc, etc... just electronics in general? You know, the wiring-harness and all???

Go to the TBI forum and look at the Budget 350 sticky. The Fast Burn has better heads, otherwise the info basically applies (still Vortec style intake).

Unless you want to convert to carb. In that case, go to the tech articles linked from the thirdgen.org homepage, and read the EFI to carb conversion article.

Re: Swap TBI for a Crate???

That's cool and all, some of that will work, but I'm not sure if I got what I wanted to say across. Basically what I am going to do is pull the 305 OUT, everything must go kinda thing, and drop in a brand new 385 crate and build from scratch there at that point, so the engine bay will be hollow with nothing in it. Maybe I just didn't see everything that the TBI forum was saying, but thanks for the input. I'll keep reading!

If you're pulling everything out, I assume that means you aren't planning on putting a TBI on the Fastburn. So, I guess that means it wasn't clear what your intentions are.

So, what are your intentions for an induction system? If we assume carb, you will need some things like alternator wiring, gage wires like tachometer, coolant temperature and oil pressure, and power to the ignition system. Before you pull everything out, identify those wires on the 305, separate them out from what you pull out, and everything will be hunky dory for reuse on the Fastburn.

Re: Swap TBI for a Crate???

Yeah, that's what I'd like to do. I knew about all the wiring, I just forgot to make that a point. Yeah the crate is carb. and I knew about getting alternator and power supplies, I was just wondering about since, mainly the dash components, was run off the computer for diagnostic reasons, I wasn't sure if it was going to be a hassle to have to convert that stuff or what, so... Thanks for that. Greatly appreciated!
