Question..........

I have a 305 Tbi in my car and a friend of mine has a 305 TPI he said he would sell me for like $200-300. The engine is out of a 92 Z28 he claims. And i know thats like the highest HP 305 TPI available stock in a third gen correct? I was j/w if i should plan a swap or stick with the TBI? I have a small budget and want to make like 200- 300 hp. Nothing crazy.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Question..........

Just put your TBI intake and all that, on top of the other block and heads.

It WILL make somewhat more power than your existing TBI motor. Even more if you get rid of the TBI exhaust.

Re: Question..........

How does a TBI compare to a TPI? Like i have an open element on mine and plan on doing headers and 3" cat back i already did new plugs wires rotor and cap. Will my Camaro be alot faster with headers? will i be able to feel a difference. I was j/w on a small budjet which one is a better way to go.

TBI would be a little less expensive to improve performance. TPI parts are a little on the high side, and you have to change runners at a minimum, and base is also good to upgrade. Those will run you about $800, and then it starts getting expensive. . .

TBI can be upgraded with carb intake and adapter, or aftermarket TBI intake. 350 or 454 TB can be gotten from the junkyard, and are popular upgrades.

TBI really benefits from PROM tuning after doing mods like being discussed here. Of course, so would '92 TPI.

Are you getting the entire TPI engine setup, or just the engine?

Just swapping over the TPI system wouldn't be too hard if you had the ECM-engine harness with all sensors, and the ECM. The hardest part would be changing the fuel pump, which you'd probably have to do with souped-up TBI, anyway.

Re: Question..........

Stay throttle body injection.

Use the TPI block and heads as mentioned and Change the exhaust. You will think you put a 350 in there after you do that!

If you are on a budget then forget TPI. Those two are not compatible. You can get a bigger throttle body from a 454 at the junkyard or ebay and the same with an aftermarket carburetor intake manifold. One adapter plate and you are in business.

You should install a fuel pump for a TPI car. The TBI pump is not really adequate for the stock setup you have now..

Good luck!!

Re: Question..........

Everything in your friend's TPI engine is what you need to get more "kick."

You need a better exhaust. TBI got the most restrictive factory setup. I believe even the TPI manifolds flow better than the TBI pieces. You definitely have to ditch your factory y-pipe. It's awful and the TPI piece is better.

You need the TPI cam or a 350 TPI cam that is computer friendly. You will have to ask Summit or Jeg's about that.

Those TPI heads are better than yours.

Your intake sucks big time. You need a good dual plane carburetor intake (like a performer) with an adapter plate for your throttle body. Make sure you get the intake that matches your heads. You have the 87 and up iron head bolt pattern...

You should get a 454 truck throttle body unit. It has 2" throttle plates that allow alot more air to move into your engine. About 670 cfm I believe...

Buy a new in tank fuel pump. Buy the one for the 87 Turbo Trans Am. It is the same pump used for the later vortec 350 trucks before they made the whole sending unit for sale as an assembly. It gives a little more pressure with your stock TBI regulator and alot more flow potential.

That should get you started!!
