v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

I swapped an 89 tpi motor into my v6. The v6 has the large 80 PSI canister sender, and the 89 has the smaller combined switch/sender unit.

What is the calibration of each of these? Are they compatible? The v6 sender was destroyed when I pulled the motor... For now I have the v8 gauge hooked up the the v6 dash. However, I don't think it is accurate. Can anybody confirm that the calibration is different?

Also... The v6 sender (If I get one) should fit the v8 block, correct?

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

IIRC the V6 sender is for a 0-90 PSI gauge and the V8 sender is for a 0-60 PSI gauge.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

this tells it all! your choice is to either find a V8 gauge or try the V6 sender but your fuel pump may not work properly.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

I don't actually have the oil pressure switch hooked up. (so my pump relay is on its own lol )

Thanks for the reply. I will try to find the v6 sender, because it is a lot easier to change the sender then the dash! (plus, the v8 sender is cracked and leaking)

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

yeah its a lot easier when the fuelpump isnt attached to the sender. the V6 unit should work just fine in this case.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

Either sender will make the gauge move, which is all that really matters, considering the inaccuracy of the stock gauge.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

true about the factory gauge being somewhat inaccurate but using the V6 sender with the V6gauge keeps it closer.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

If I remember correctly when the v6 was in I compared the stock gauge and used a wally world mechanical gauge and they were pretty damn close. When I get the new one i'll let you guys know!

I am searching for a replacement that I can get tomorrow...

On this page, it lists sseveral sender/switches. One says "with gauge" and one says "80 psi"

Which one is the OEM spec sender?

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

by cross referencing various sites I found that the ones that just say "with gauge" are the 60 psi V8 models and the 80 psi ones are the correct one for the v6.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

Scratch that idea.... The v6 sender is too large to fit on the v8. I bought one and found out the hard way!

One more question...

How the heck do you get a wrench on that v8 sender? Do they make a special socket for it or something? I could NOT get that thing out.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

where is your sender located? some are down near the oil filter and some are just behind the distributor.

It is right next to the oil filter.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

check and see if you have a 1/4" plug behind your distributor. if one is there you could use a brass extension with 90* elbow to mount it topside.

Every block ever made has a port in that location you can use.

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

Yes, I though about using that port. the only problem s my wiring harness (custom harness), which is really thick in that location. I would be worried about breaking the elbow off. (a-la wishmaster)

Maybe I can use some kind of extension in the stock location?

Apeiron, do you happen to know what particular extension would work?

Re: v6 vs v8 oil pressure sender

Your local parts store will have a set of bins of Weatherhead brass fittings. Try about a 1 or 2" nipple and an elbow.

If your working on your Berlinetta than you have no choise but to install the correct sender. That's a good thing ! This is true because the V6 oil pressure guage in a digital Berlinetta has the same part number on it as a V8 oil pressure gauge. The difference appears ONLY on the faceplate.

This leads me to believe that the V6 and V8 canister gauges will show the same readings regardless of which one is installed. I don't KNOW THAT - it's just an assumption based on what I know to be true about the Berlinetta cluster.

As far as the "regular" Camaro's go,...... since the oil pressure unit is mounted on the Tach you would not want to swap because then your TACH would be off.
