lookin for a winter project...
hey,
I haven't been on this site in a LONG TIME (talkin years now)
I'm back to my faithful 3rd gen (85 /Ta) lookin to maybe change it the engine (305)
i have rebuilt this current engine with all the basics, and it runs perfect and does have some good power....BUT gas is crazy and i know people with newer faster engines that are better on the juice!
Wondering what would you all recomend for a good swap. I was thinking of a popular create engine.
I also wanted to know about changin out the 5 speed trans for a new tremec 6 speed (i didn't see a forem for that) AND i have replaced my rear end a few times (as i haven't had luck getting used ones) (maybe is there an entire COMBO i shoud be lookin for?)
My current rear recently started with some vibration when i'm coasting around over 100km... goes away when i accelerate but once i let off it starts.
Thanks for any and all recomendations or help as to where i should look.
JOSH

Re: lookin for a winter project...
I think the V8 swap guys who get the best mileage are swapping LS-series V8s into their cars and using the 4th gen PCM to run it. It appears that it is not too terribly difficult of a swap and there is some nice info at the top of "Engine Swap" to help you out. They even have their own spin off forum under engine swap. You can get the smaller 5.3 off of ebay for a few thousand bucks complete now...
The tranny swap is done from time to time in the transmission forum. Searching there should net you the list of swap parts required.
I would look into using an entire replacement rear end from Strange if I were you. They sell the Ford 9" and Chevy 12 bolt direct drop-ins at a reasonable price. For my money, I think the Strange S60 is the best. It is truly bulletproof and the guys here who run them have not had any appreciable losses due to the extra weight.
Hope this helps!!
Good luck!
