305 4bbrl to TPI Advice for Power ?

I posted something similar in another area but here is my question: I have a 86 305 TPI in a parts car that I'd like to swap into my 1986 305 4bbrl camaro. My current motor runs good and I'll leave it there till I get the donor motor out and ready. While I have the TPI motor out and on the stand what modification are recommended for maximimum power without breaking the bank? 300+ HP would be nice. Should I rebuild the motor first?

Recommendation for how to remove the motor, computer, etc so that I can get it into my carb setup z28? thanks.

I assume you're sticking with the carb.

If that's the case, there really isn't anything substantial about the TPI engine that is different from the LG4 (assuming that's what it is - you said carb). The TPI cam is a little better, but something like a Comp XE262 is even better, and will wake up either engine.

Don't "rebuild" the engine. You can have the heads redone with 1.94" intake valve and the port bowl area cleaned up, that's about the most (along with the cam change) that you should do.

Exhaust is a must. What are you doing? If you're sticking with factory, the TPI exhaust is the superior system.

Re: 305 4bbrl to TPI Advice for Power ?

I just put a motor in my '86. I pulled just the motor first then took the trans out after the motor was out. We tried something different when we put the motor back in though. Depending on what kind of hoist you are using, (I used a shop hoist) It might be easier to pull the motor and the trans as a whole out of the car while the back of the car is about 2 1/2 to 3 feet in the air with the front end on the ground. I did a 305 4bbl to 305 TPI swap as well. The only problem that you will run into is the fuel lines. Mine were a pita! On the carbed cars the fuel lines run on the pass side of the car but the TPI engines all have the fuel lines on the drivers side. I used SS braided fuel line with fittings and in line fuel filter. If you have stock TPI fuel lines then thats the way to go. If not, have fun with those lines...

I'm just finishing up my swap tomorrow. I almost have the whole car back together. Took me about 2 weeks although I work 8 hours a day and 12 on saturday. Youre going to need a TPI throttle cable as well if you dont already have one... What really took me so long with this swap is waiting on parts...

Computer is behind the dash on the passenger side. I put the whole wiring harness from the car i got the motor from into my car. It worked out the best in the long run.

You're going to need to put the fuel pump in from the other car. (In tank pump) Pulling your fuel tank isnt going to be that hard. just be sure that you have all the gas out of the tank and that you drop the rear end almost completely out. (just leave hooked up to LCAs)

Good luck with your swap.
