I was going to do a large displacement sbc and then thought about a more exotic route. Now I am finally decided on a big block either a 496 (454 +.060 with a 4.25" crank) or a 502. standard deck not really sure which heads but I just saw a review on patriot performance's new aluminum bbc heads. looked impressive and were only $1500 a pair. and a 6-71 supercharger. now for the questions. any idea on how high of a hood I will need? or should I just get a flat z28 hood and cut it out for the blower? I will be using a turbo 400 and 9" rear. I know I will need help with the chassis too but I will start another post on the correct forum. Thnaks

 

cubic inch syndrome....no cure I saw those heads also, I have been shopping for something aluminum to replace my 17 yr old iron merlins... The pictures of the ports and what not look good...large outlets,inlets, small bowls, good shapes. I just an hour ago bought Air flow research 325`s.....I was thinking of waiting on patriot to post more info on them...(deck thickness, valve angles, exh port locations compared to stock and a few other but I have been set on the AFR`s for sometime now anyhow, def looks like a very nice head for the $..1295 for a flat tappet version 1495 for a .700 lift roller, other cnc options are reasonable as well.
I would think a 6 inch cowl would cover a 6-71 but I have never tried it, put it in then measure

 

I was thinking AFR also as they are great heads in every platform. They are definitely one of the best but the price reflects that. what kind of numbers were you making with the iron heads? Even though I will be keeping it mainly on the street some back road passes will be in it's future. but being a vert the rules are different and since I want to keep it street legal I don't want the 14 point cage.

 

I have Canfield 310's on my engine. They're a little small for the 540 but let me run in the ET range I want. There isn't much of a difference between the height of a 6-71 blower and a tunnel ram. My car has a tunnel ram and dual 850's on top of it. Some tall K&N filters sit on the carbs. There are 1" Super Sucker carb spacers under the carbs. In my sig, you can see how tall a 6" scoop is and how far the filters stick out of the scoop. I even have my engine sitting lower than normal. I would never recommend a 6" scoop for street use. If someone is standing at the right front of the car, I can't see them.

6-71 is actually more of a street blower for a BBC. A BBC is better off with an 8-71 for serious power. Here's an example of a third gen with a blown BBC under the hood.

definitely a badass ride but that is way to high for me. is the 6-71 any shorter? not looking for huge hp #'s anyway the big block itself is a hell of a jump from most other swaps anyway. but I want some kind of power adder and I don't normally see many third gens with a blower.

 

A blower poking out of the hood always has that cool factor but you don't need to use a roots style blower. There are smaller blowers available like a B&M or Whipple and there are a few centrifugal blowers available that would fit under the hood. The Whipple is a screw compressor and is more efficient than a roots blower.

I remember seeing a show car many years ago, not a third gen. The roots style blower was mounted off the front of the crankshaft and driven direct 1:1

 

whipple looks alot lot a high helix bds design. I like it too and was thinking about it before but I haven't seen any using a carb. and don't really want to go fuel injected on this motor.

If nothing else I may just do a mild compression n/a big block. I am planning on using the hydroboost brake system so that way I can add a little more cam.

I took that pic in the late 80's I believe it is a Whipple with a carb. on a SB, it all fit under the hood ....on a TA at that.....but I have never seen that setup on anything since. Reading this thread made me remembered I had this pic so I figure I would post it. Obviously Whipple had a kit for carbs at one time (for a SB at least) but I think they were few and far between.
