L98 Build

ok, so I have bought back my first car. Its an '85 z28 with a '86 TPI 350. the swap was done before I bought the car the first time. College was about to happen and i had to get something more reliable for the long drive. anyway, i have just about got the motor pulled out of the car to rebuild it and wanted to run some ideas by you guys because multiple heads are better than one.
I got some prices from a local racing motor shop. to clean, magnaflux(magflux-whatever its called), bore/hone, and deck is $330. n not bad i thought. i want to bore it .030. i want to go eagle cast 3.75 crank, i beam 5.7" rods, kieth black hyperutectic flat top pistons, clevite bearings, sealed power rings for the rotating assymbly. edelbrock performer rpm heads, cam, lifters, rods, timing chain. summit roller rockers and 58mm throttle body. intake i want to keep stock except get them ported and polished... the edelbrock aftermarket cost way to much for the power gain... this should give me 10.7 compression ratio with the 64cc heads. i figured this is the only time im going to pull this moter out so i should do it right... what ratio roller rockers should i get? would porting and polishing the stock heads and manley valves, edelbrock springs give me more bang for the buck? im on a bugdet so it will take me a while but im a patient guy. give me your input, all is appreciated. thanks
-jason

Re: L98 Build

if you want to do it right i'd recommend getting heads. scrap those old L98 heads. They have potential but just isnt worth the effort, and cost if your not doing it yourself.

with keeping stock TPI stuff, i'd recommend siamesing the base TPI plate and porting it out as best you can. That will give you some rpm and more power to play with. Got to open up the smallest passage midway thru the runner tube and right before the runner tube goes into the cylinder head intake runners. thats the restriction spot. Else shop for used high flow TPI stuff or a Stealth Ram or something

as far as rockers go, that depends on your cam and heads you want to run. run the rocker that will give you the lift that you want to run and will best suit your heads. if the heads you get peak flow at around .500 lift, then it makes no sense to run .550 lift cam. So match the cam/rocker arms to the heads. most cams are advertised with 1.5 ratio rockers so adjust accordingly to 1.6's to see the lift gains.

Re: L98 Build

do a search for it on this site and youl'l see exactly what it does. its dyno proven to gain hp and move the powerband higher up in the rpm range

basically you take out the center divider several inches in the TPI base intake manifold. Isnt all that hard to do with a nice grinder and few hours of your time.
