350 to 350 swap questions
Hey everyone,
Please be patient, I know it's long but I would really appreciate your advice here. I have 2 third gens in my driveway currently that can't be driven and would like to combine them to one driveable car.
The first is an automatic 86 IROC-Z with a Goodwrench 350 with aluminum heads (2.02/1.60 valves), Comp Cam 268 XE, 1.6 roller rockers, Hedman headers, a Weiand stealth intake, and a Holley 650 DP. This car is no longer road-worthy as it was hit from behind.
The second is an automatic 91 Z28 with a solid body, fair interior, and stock TPI 350. This car idles horribly as the cam was changed before I bought it and never had the right chip burned for it. So now I have a car that idles so rough I can't drive it anymore. The only solution I see is changing the cam and getting the right chip burned after I do this.
But.......
If I do end up having to change the cam, I would rather begin upgrading this motor, instead of going through the work of changing the cam, just to have a stock car again so I was hoping to take everything from the top end from the IROC and put it onto the Z28. Would this be possible? Also what other parts would I need for this conversion? I'm just hoping to have one car that I'm able to drive. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Colin

Re: 350 to 350 swap questions
I believe the right answer for you would be to simply put a cam into motor #1 that the TPI ECM would be happy with, and drive the car. Any other path is going to cost several times as much and be ALOT more work, and you probably won't be as happy in the end.
I'd suggest this one right here. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...CL12%2D262%2D4
Sell the Weiand intake and the carb, and make yourself some money on the engine part of the deal, maybe even. You can probably bring the headers along, but that would depend on how they were installed, what's welded, etc. I can't predict that from here.

Re: 350 to 350 swap questions
yaya thats what id do.. sell the TPI top end to some noob who thinks tire smoke is where its at.. headwise the blocks are the same aluminum heads FTW. the TPI motor should be a roller setup.. dunno about the carbed one but id suspect its a solid lifter, shouldn't be a big deal solid lifter will still ride in the roller lifter bores, they just sit far deeper in. This is assuming you're taking the cam/lifters/pushrods out of the carbed motor. you'll also need the timing set off the solid lifter motor as the roiller one wont bolt up to a solid lifter cam. Would really be better to just swap the motors/harnesses between the cars.. then its just figuring the pinout if they're different sorry it so long but im in the middle of working on an 88, an 86 Z28, and a 91 Z28, and felt the need to share what little i know on the subject
Re: 350 to 350 swap questions
Ok, well first i just want to say thanks for your responses. So here's my problem now. The TPI needs to go so that the carb can go on. I'm being stubborn here (probably stupid i know). I want the carb on the 91. If I pull the TPI base, runners, and plenum off, can I put the Weiand manifold I already have onto these heads? Or am I going to have to buy a different manifold designed to fit the stock heads?
Thanks in advance
