1970 350 swap
1970 350 swap
Hello, this is my first time posting anything so here we go. I have a 1987 trans am gta. Its not in bad shape but the motor is knocking. I have a 1970 350 out of a chevelle, ands its still carburated and the gta is tbi i belive. Im wondering how hard it would be to putt that into the gta if its even possible. I have heard from a couple people that i might be able to change the intake off the orignal motor and putt it onto the new motor. Thanks.

Re: 1970 350 swap
If your GTA has the original engine then it's an 87-up small block chevy with factory roller cam, one piece rear main seal, and the intake bolts on differently. The two middle bolts on both sides of the intake go in at a different angle than the older intakes from 1986 and before. If you buy yourself an intake for a 1985/1986 TPI engine, it will bolt to the older heads like it's supposed to.
For the computer to be happy, you will need to also run a pre-87 TPI camshaft (non-roller style) and I'm not sure the one you have is good or not.
You may want to just take your 87 engine apart, repair or replace the crank and damaged rods, and re-use that. It can become pretty costly to put an older engine in once you start totalling up all of the extra parts required to do it right.
Welcome aboard and good luck!

Also, check your heads on the 350. You will need to have 3 accessory holes in the front of each one in order to bolt up your bracketry. Many older chevy heads have only 2 or sometimes none at all. If you don't have any, you can use your TPI heads as well on your 350 block.
