305 to SD Vortec 360 swap
Hello all-
I started this post as a 305 to 383 stroker swap, but with the emissions issues and the responses/help from TGO members I have decided to install the SD Vortec 360 crate engine: http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD360...ripEngine.aspx
along with this we decided that it would need upgrades of:
-Runners
-Throttle body
-Headers
-Knock sensor
-EGR kit
and a the car would need a sub-frame installed.
Okay after all that said, do you guys have any recommendations on the size of throttle body? and type of runners? Also, any recommendations of the size of fuel injectors? One last question, do you think that I should also install a different radiator? and if so any suggestions? Aluminium, 4 core, etc... Any other suggestions are also appreciated for this swap.
Thanks,
Tony

Don't forget headers. They said they used 1-7/8" primary, probably long tube.
They said they used a 52mm TB. From what I've heard, anything bigger doesn't help, and hurts low-RPM response.
22 lb injectors is what they used (stock), 24 lb probably wouldn't hurt you.
A good V8 radiator is all you should need. If you "have" to go 4 core, something is probably wrong.

Thanks five7kid! I did see that on SD's spec sheet, I just thought I would ask to insure that was a good way to go.... As for the radiator, I just wanted to make sure that the stock one was going to be okay... Thanks for all the help!

52mm will support that motor, possibly even the stocker 48.
dont worry about the longtubes and such since you need to be emissions legal. you'll need something like Dyno Dons 1 3/4 shorties with AIR tubes or the hookers 2055's. both have a ypipe and i think dyno dons are similar in price to the hookers. Longtubes would make more power but emissions
24lb injectors would be nice for that setup.
i like siamese SLP runners for TPI motors. BIG tubes from AS&M or TPIS would be ok as well. If you can swing it, big tube semi siamesed AS&M would be the thing to get. Really help that top end that TPI cant make.
Other than that i think you'll be happy with it. Down the road you could always port the vortec tpi base, add a bigger cam, or booost it for abit more power.

A little background (in case you hadn't heard it):
SD wanted to provide TPI owners with a way to use the HO 350 under the TPI they already had. They worked with Edelbrock to come up with a base to match the Vortec ports with the TPI runners. After a few miscues, they finally came up with one they could dyno. The results were extremely disappointing, an engine that makes 330 HP with a simple carb makes barely as much as a stock L98. So, they try to figure out how to get it up to the 330 mark - runners, almost 300. TB, around 300. More cam, a little over 300. Finally resort to a Hot Cam w/1.6 rockers, requires their "upgrade" Vortec heads, over-shoot the mark slightly at 357 HP.
What to do, what to do? They've spent a bunch of money developing a disappointment. So, they decide to make a "crate" package out of the block/heads/cam/base they put together to get above 330 HP.
They'll probably never recoup their loss. But, you wouldn't think they'd discourage potential customers, even now. But, I suppose the real money is in "standard" Gen I, and Gen III stuff.

Thanks Orr89RocZ! These are great tips. I looked around for these AS&M semi siamesed runners and have no idea where to buy them???? Could you fill me in with that as well? Thanks!

thats interesting. I havent heard that before.
That motor may not be very impressive since TPI will choke 40+hp off that motor, but with alot of work, you can easily push over the 400hp flywheely hp mark. Many guys here have done it, i'm just not sure vortec heads as cast will get it done. The TPI base and runners will really need worked
I dont know if AS&M still have those runners or not. I see they still make the big tubes, and those may have to do. Else search classifieds to find some or the SLP siamesed runners. SLP's tho will need worked to really get flow potential out of it

Thanks Orr! I looked for that Semi Siamese Runner as well with no luck either. Also you were saying that I would have to change out my stock chip, do you or anyone else have any recommendations there?

Re: 305 to SD Vortec 360 swap
it would need good tuning to bring the best out for sure! If you cant do it yourself, then you'll have to find a tuning shop around your area that could do it... or else mail order
I'd try pcmforless or FASTchip. seem to be two of the better ones that are still doing the mail order thing for our cars
