possibility of retaining vats with tbi to tpi swap
is it possible to keep the vats system working when swapping from a 91 tbi car to a 88 tpi? does the 88 tpi use vats? i would like it to work after my swap, so many posts ive read just state how everyone disables it.

Only some of the 88 GTA's use VATS. You can use an '89 chip and that will have VATS in it. Your '88 wire harness wont have the wires in it for VATS so you would be better off converting your existing harness.

I'm doing the same swap. I have an 88 ECM and PROM and I'm hoping to be able to use this on my 92 RS. Can the VATS be bypassed to work with the 88 stuff?

Kevin,
when you say to modify the existing harness are you talking the 88 harness or the tbi one in the car now? also how would I go about doing the modification? is there a link to where somone may have already done it?
rod,
bypassing the vats system is easy done with the resistor trick, do a search on bypassing vats there are many threads ive read on it. basically you have to know the resistance of your key and match that resistance using resistors and jump the wires before they go to the ignition, cant remember the colors of the wires but like i said there are posts on it with pics to help identify the proper wires.

Convert the existing harness in your car to work with TPI. They use almost all the same sensors, so its just a matter of lengthening some, shortening others, and adding the third plug to the TPI speed density ECM. There is either a tech article on how to do this, or its in one of the many TBI to TPI threads on this board.
