87 L98 into 86 305 manual car

hey guys,

I have searched and have this remaining question:

For the swap... what do i need to do to run the 350 in the 305 car when mated to the stock 5 speed tranny?

Should i take the 350 ecm and put it in the car?

I bought the body with no engine and am ready to do the swap... the last owner put a carb on the 305 so i dont know what all is there. I think it might be easier to jsut pull it all out of the 86, then re-install everything from my 87.
I heard i would just need to redo my prom to allow for the 5 speed..?

Any thoughts, i am all ears.. thanks in advance!

If you want to use the TPI from the '87 car, you're going to have to pull all of the harnesses and sensors from it along with the engine. Wouldn't hurt to get the fuel pump and fuel lines as well, if the '86 didn't originally come with TPI.

For the 5-speed, just be sure to put a pilot bearing in the crank before mating the tranny. '86 & '87 use the same flywheel, so just tell them you need a pilot bearing for an '86 305 5-speed.

Re: 87 L98 into 86 305 manual car

what does the pilot bearing do?

also, the 86 was fuel injected at one point and still has all the wiring, but i think it might be easier to just rip it all out, clean the engine bay up, and move it all over from the 87, that way i can run it how i want and keep the engine bay cleaned up..

The pilot bearing supports the transmission input shaft at the engine end. The engine and transmission input shaft need to be able to move at different speeds relative to each other, hence the bearing.

The '86 wiring has some slight differences from the '87 wiring, so if you're using the '87 accessories (alternator, AC), then you might want to go ahead and use the '87 stuff. I wouldn't "rip out" the '86 wiring, since it can be easily removed intact.
