How much would you pay?
Ok guys i figuered in 8 to 12 months i will be ready for a new engine! I am planning on a 350 or a 350 made into a 383 stroker. I am wanting to have 400 hp to the rear wheels. So i was thinking around 450-475 at the crank. Now i was planning on around 6,000 am i in the right ball park with this price or should i be paying more or less? I will be having a local performance shop doing it for me.
thanks

Any reason you don't want to buy a new crate engine? Only reason I had a shop build mine was for the forced induction. Otherwise I would have saved some money and bought a complete engine.

Sounds reasonable, but maybe on the light side for a turn-key custom 383 from a performance shop. The ZZ383 is about $5100 for what is essentially a crate long block. You would need an intake manifold, carb, water pump, and a few other items to make it work. It's the small stuff like bolts and brackets that nickel and dime you as a restoration project goes along. Super Chevy did a budget 383 stroker build, I think they spent about $5k but did much of the work themselves. Here it is.
If it were me, and $6k was the budget, I'd look at a crate 350 and get quotes for installing it. Not only would it be much faster than the stock 305, you could upgrade a few components down the road as you get money for them (manifold, cam, etc.). The GM 350 HO is 330hp/380tq and $2660 from Summit (long block only).
