What can I drop in?
What can I drop in?
I have a 1987 Camaro Iroc-Z. The previous owner had the stock 305 replaced with a 350 5.7 engine which p/n is 12520268. I have read the specs which state it has 200hp. Just wondering if there are any engines that will drop into the vehicle without having to modify much in the car. I was looking at engines on some websites that have like 330 hp or something like that. Not sure if it was a simple engines swap or if a lot of things would have to be modified. Thanks for any input.

You don't need to swap the engine, you can just swap parts you already have to get that kind of power.

That's a truck engine. A whole lot of low end torque and low redline = low HP number, which is calculated from torque and RPM.
If you want HP numbers, you need something that revs really high and makes decent torque at the top end. Not necessarily a good street engine but that's what's needed if you want high HPs.

so here is a good question.. are all of GM 350 5.7L engines the same when it comes to bolt on products.. for example i went on summit racing and clicked that I have a 350 however its not the same 350 that was an option since you say its a truck engine.. would headers and all that still work even though this is a "truck" engine as you said?
Re: What can I drop in?
any sbc will "drop in". The real question is more complicated. What type of induction do you have now? TPI, TBI, carb? If you have a TPI or TBI motor you will be limited on the amount of hp with out also spending a lot on the induction system. If you have a non-computer controlled, after market carb, then You are a simple carb and intake swap away from whatever power level motor you choose. If your motor is low milage, and you don't want to spend a lot on upgrading your TPI, or TBI, then some simple add ons can have you in the three hundred horse range

Heads, cam, exhaust, air cleaner (assuming you have a carb), you'll make the same power as those crate engines.
It should be cast & machined to accept factory roller lifters & cam.

You can get 357 hp really easy. Do the headers and exhaust, Get some Vortec heads, the HOT cam from GM, and the lower intake to match the heads. All of this, including the 357 hp result, comes from www.sdparts.com
