I bought a '92 Camaro RS with the 305 TBI (124,800 miles) and it's got computer problems with timing (thanks to the previous owners who didn't know what they were doing) and we suspect it also has a bad cam. We've switched it back to TBI (it was unproperly carb'd when I got it and ran terrible) It is pulling 0-60 in almost 15 seconds, it should be around 8. I have a friend who owned a 1988 Iroc-z Camaro in excellent shape for three years until it was totaled in a side impact crash. The motor is a 305 TPI, they told me it was rated around 215hp, it has redone valve seals and only 70,000 miles. The motor, tranny and computer are all included, and are all in good shape. He's selling them together for $1,250. The swap has been sitting for three years.

I would like to pull my motor and tranny and install his. I do not have the tools or experience nesscessary to pull my motor and tranny, nor put the new one in. I need to know what that would cost labor wise, and what else would need to be done to make the Iroc-z swap work for my car. I am also wondering if I could get my tachometer to work afterwards and the electronic things like cruise control. Is there anything I need to know before I buy the swap?

 

I hope the wiring harness is included as well.

Finding a shop to do this won't be easy or cheap. They wouldn't have a flat rate to quote, but you might be able to get them to quote the full job. Hourly would probably kill you. If you do find a shop that says they will do it, be suspicious of whether they know what they're doing.

Thanks. I was quoted today for it. They told me it'd be an 8 hour job, and they'd charge $45 an hour. The guy I spoke to seemed like he was knowledgeable, but it would be done at a place that mainly does oil changes and tire rotations... good idea or bad?

 

oil change and tire rotations place doing a engine swap id say bad idea. also if ur gona swap engines y stick with a 305?

 

$1250 for a 70,000 mile TPI 305 + tranny is insane
