Remanufactured engines

I am looking around for a rebuilt 305 engine. SO far i went on cmengines.com and found a 300 hp rebuilt 305 for $1,500 for the block assembly/$2,700 for the complete engine.

And i also got a quote from Precision engine Rebuilders for $995.00 with a $300 deposit on my core return. it has all new internal parts, pistons, piston rings, cam bearings, main and rod bearings, timing set, freeze plugs, rear main seal, oil gallery plugs, lifters, camshaft (in some cases a remanufactured cam is installed) complete gasket set, oil pump and valvetrain installed. The heads are surfaced, new guides and seals installed, and are finished with 3 angle valve seats.

I dont really know what they are worth, are either of these good deals/ does anyone know of where to find a better one?

Re: Remanufactured engines

From what I've been looking at,your first figure is in the ballpark.I went to the Jasper website, and for a remanufactured 305 they wanted $2,642.Everybody and their mommy suggested that I get a 350,but that costs $3500 not including freight, skid fee, core charge or the 'installation kit' which includes everything down to the plug wires and belts.I went with the 305, and along with some other work I'm getting done to the car, my estimate is close to $4K.I don't know if the Jasper is any better or worse than anything else out there,But I have one in my minivan and I'm pleased with it. I opted for the 305 because I just want a reliable cruiser while I work on my REAL hot rod, a SBC powered Studebaker!!

Re: Remanufactured engines

You should look at the 'service replacement' engines from GM. Much better build quality and component quality than what the aftermarket mass-rebuilders will build, and the cost isn't too much different.

You could probably get a nice L30 (305 Vortec) or L31 (350 Vortec) longblock for not much more than what those places charge for a rebuilt longblock (this is what they call a 'complete engine' for some reason).

Re: Remanufactured engines

I also believe that GM is a much better deal. Check out this link for the 305:

http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/crat...teEngines.aspx

This puts your GM 305 at 1875 dollars. Add shipping to that and you are blowing away Jasper or the rest. It just doesn't make sense to use a reman engine when the GM stuff is the same price.

This is a NEW engine that you just need to put your intake and exhaust on. Bolt your accessories back on and run, its that easy.

So, what will it be?

Here is the exact LO3 link:
http://www.sdpc2000.com/product/1251...ateEngine.aspx
----------
Here is the L31 Vortec 350 link:

http://www.sdpc2000.com/product/1253...er8500GVW.aspx

This one is also too economical to use a reman..

Re: Remanufactured engines

what does it mean if you look at the engine and it says not to use if your vin number does not have an *** letter or number in it? you find some code that they are using that is part of your vin. can you run gm crate engines in cars that have different codes?
i swpaed out a tbi for a tpi and it runs fine but my engine rebuild is going very slow so maybe i can put in a gm crate engine. but the codes dont match. or is that warning just gm being gm.
and some of the engines i looked at are actually truck engines with only 200 hp to begin with. so what gives on that?

Thats really only for emitions/compatibility purposes. For example, and L31 engine was only available in trucks and SUVs, not in cars, so its not a 'legal' engine swap into a car chassis, as its not emitions certified for use in a car.

As for compatibility with existing parts, sometimes that can cause problems as well. The L31 engine is again, a good example. While it is a small block chevy and most of your TBI 5.0L engines parts will bolt up and function just fine, the intake manifold is not compatible with L31 heads. It requires a different intake manifold to work, and that manifold does not come with the engine.

Its basically just GM covering their own butt against people who have not done their homework on swapping in a different engine than what they will be pulling out - "its not our problem if it doesn't work, we told you so" sorta thing.

If your car had the 5.0 TBI stock, then the engine code is 'L03' and whatever the 8th digit of the VIN code is for the engine (8th digit is always the engine code). 'L31' is the engine code for the Vortec 5.7, and the VIN code for it is 'R' for the trucks/SUVs that came with that engine.

That would be "E".

Any particular reason you're going to spend the same or more money on a 305 rather than a 350?
