Its got a 305 in it now. There is a shop here who can do any kind of swap I want and I was thinking it would be cheaper to get a SBC then an LSX

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
It certainly is possible to spend more on a 383 swap than a LS1 swap could cost, but generally speaking, the 383 should be less. Especially if you're paying somebody to do it.
The ECM doesn't have to be changed, but the tune does.

hey Thanks, Yeah I am not going to BS my self as much as I would love to try and swap them my self I really dont have the knowledge to do it or the tools or garage space. I have mangaged to save up a little over 15 grand though and there is a shop here in town who has a good rep and they did some work for me before on a LS1 car I used to own. so hopefully ill be able to work something out with them. I knew the car would have to be re tuned but I wasnt sure if the wireing harness or computer currently in the car would be able to manage it. Now I just have to explain all this to my wife lol

What type of induction are you planning to use? If its a TPI or TPI-based system, then you should be fine with just tinkering with the TPI ECM. Even the Holley Stealth Ram manifold (which might be a wise upgrade for a big motor like a 383) can be used with all the TPI electronics and most of the hardware (injectors, etc) if I remember correctly.

well If I am not mistaken the car has TBI now. I dont know if that makes a differnce when switching to TPI. I think it does. anyways, most of the engines I've been looking at all were turn key's that came with Carb's.

a tbi harness won't work on a tpi and neither will the ecm.
