v6 to v8 electrical questions
v6 to v8 electrical questions
Well I can't find anyone in my area that can answer this because no one has done this swap so I figured I would ask you guys. I am doing a 3.1L v6 92 camaro to 350 carb'd. My key has the anti theft chip in it or whatever that thing is. How does it work? Will I need to leave my V6 ECM to recognize this chip? I am doing a emissions legal swap in Pennsylvania. Will I need to have the V8 ECM and all the sensors with it even though I am going carb'd? I know you guys get a lot of these V6 to V8 swap questions. I looked all over the forums and asked everyone I could for answers but no one knows because no one around here has done it. Im just trying to pick someones brain and know exactly what I am doing before I do it. Thanks a lot guys.

There is a VATS tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage.
There's no such thing as an emissions-legal carb swap in a '92 model year chassis.

Re: v6 to v8 electrical questions
He's right to be emissions legal you have to swap in the same year injected engine or a newwer one and the computer has to have your vin in it to truelly be legal . Also the engine has to be offered inthe same class of vehicle .
Re: v6 to v8 electrical questions
are you guys sure on that? My moms boyfriend who has been doing inspection/emissions testing for over 30 years, and my friends dad who has been doing it just about as long both told me as long as I have a functioning EGR valve, a CAT, and a gas cap that seals correctly then I have an emissions legal vehicle. Remember, they aren't ***** here in PA. Thats why most people I know have hollowed out CATs.
EDIT: I just called my friends dad and he said PCV valve, EGR valve, gas cap, and CAT. My moms boyfriend comes home for lunch at 1:15pm so I will ask him when he walks in.
EDIT2: Upon reading this http://www.drivecleanpa.state.pa.us/...pa/info_nr.htm (click "Fact sheet for the Northern Region" its a PDF file) it states that they will check your gas cap and will visually check my CAT, EGR valve, PCV valve, fuel inlet restrictor, air pump, and evaporation control system components such as vapor canisters and lines

Re: v6 to v8 electrical questions
As long as they just check to be sure emissions are there and working and don't care what you run under the hood and don't do an obd check you should be fine .
