Your 350 does not need to come from another Camaro/Firebird. after '79, most 350s were installed in pickups. You can use a 350 from '74-'79, with the driver's side dipstick. For '80, GM moved the dipstick to the passenger side, and changed the oilpan. So the '80-'85 blocks are the most similar to what an '83 should have. For '86, GM changed the blocks, cranks, oilpans and flywheels/flexplates to allow the new 1-piece rear main seals. This drastically reduced warranty claims for oil leaks. Then for '87, passenger car V8s got rollers added to the lifters. All the SBCs got new centerbolt valve covers with the heads revised to match, for '87, and the angle of the 4 center intake manifold bolts was revised, except for the 'vette. You do have an easier option. Spend around $1600 for an all-new-parts, including block, Goodwrench 350 directly from GM, part number 10067353. It's a direct bolt-in for you, just transfer your mounts, manifolds and accessories from your 305. It can't get any simpler to go to a 350.
