budget 406 build tips needed

I recently picked up a 406 in good condition for 400 bucks. it's got 3000 miles on it since it's last rebuild. it's got pistons, crank, oil pump and pick-up and a pan. The car has in it now a 350 tpi. i don't have a lot of money. i was wondering if i could use the 350 heads, cam and tpi intake. any help would be appreciated as this will be my first motor build. thank you.

You can use the 350 heads, but you need to drill the steam holes. A will give you the details on that.

You can't use the cam, at least not without some hassles and a lot of expense. '91 uses roller hydraulic lifters, a 400 won't have provision for the anti-rotation retention the factory used. You can use retrofit roller lifters - big $'s. But, you'll have to figure out a way to retain the cam, and I don't believe cam buttons work with factory roller cams. An aftermarket flat tappet hydraulic cam will be fine.

The TPI base bolts to the heads, so yes, you can use it. It will severely choke the engine, but as long as you can live with only operating in the lower RPM range, it'll work. Plan on reprogramming the computer.

thanks for the info. i think i'll just get myself a new cam and a set of sollid flat tappet lifter. my plan is to get all the bottom end done, so i can put it in the car, and finish the top end off later when i have more money available. i'm not looking to make an all out race car, just something cool to roll around in, and i think the sound of a 400 is bad ***.

No reason for solid lifters. Just get a hydraulic flat tappet cam & lifter set.
