my first swap

the 86 camaro im buying in two weeks for 800 bucks has rod knock..this will be my first car and only one im able to get for a while....the car is coming with a 350 from 92 blazer and i wanted to know before i got the car about how much will it cost to do the swap. For I am on a tight budget, in my last year of highschool, live with a friend and just really want this car going in the right direction....i know externally just about everything is the same on the 305 and 350.....but just what and how much will it take to do the swap

Anything will help.

Re: my first swap

hey, welcome to the engine swap club. Price can very greatly depending on what you want to do. Seeing that you already have a v8 in there, you can definitely save a lot if you reuse your current fuel and ignition setup. What do you have for fuel? Do you have access to basic (and some specialty) tools? Engine hoist?

All you should need is intake manifold gaskets, and whatever "maintenance items" you decide to replace at the same time - other gaskets, seals, hoses, water pump, starter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, etc.

Not sure how complete the '92 engine is, but you just want the basic "long block" - meaning the block, heads, and you should be able to use the tin (oil pan, timing cover, valve covers). The 350 harmonic damper on the front should be okay as well. Put your '86 external parts on - intake manifold, carb (assuming it's got a carb and not TPI), distributor, water pump, alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, damper pulley, flexplate, starter, exhaust manifolds - all the rest.

One issue you will find is the '86 heads have the center two intake manifold mount bolts at the same angle as the rest, while the '92 heads have the center two at 72 degrees and the rest at 90 degrees. Modifying the holes in the intake manifold isn't too difficult, but will be an extra hassle.
