Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

I just realized I have some pics of the engine before teardown on this thread so through looking at those, I think I deduced that 1 and 3 are my a/c pump brackets. Any other help would be great, I just need anyone with a 305 to go look at their engine for a few seconds for old dac and figure out what's what.

Thanks, DacMan

Thanks Luke, I really appreciate it. If you could get me some pics of the power steering pump brackets that would be great.

Thanks, DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Well I got some work done today, thanks to the help of Luke I got my first bracket on! lol. I know where most of the others go, I just need to get the mounting bolts painted and throw em' on. So that's my first pic, it's lightly mounted because those bolts still need to dry. My second and third pics are of my battery hold down bracket. It took me the better half of a day to get it welded up and ground down then painted, as well as a trip to the hardware store for nuts and washers. I am really proud of it though, I think it came out nicely for some old bed frame angle iron, and an amature welder. Those ground down welds, are the first beads I've ever laid.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Also I looked at some vaccum diagrams in my chilton manual and found that all my vaccum "tubes" are hooked up to the correct vaccum accuators for the system to function properly; with the exception of one thing, my main vaccum line that runs from the engine compartment isn't hooked up. I found the black line that runs through the firewall and into the interior of the car, and I also found the violet line that's supposed to feed from the black hose to the a/c control pannel. However what is weird is that the black hose and violet hose don't hook up properly. Neither ends of the violet hose will mate with the black. So I have a pic of one end that is paticulairly pecular. I don't know where it goes, and I also don't see on the main a/c control pannel where the violet hose hooks into, so here's the pic of the one end. I fogot the other end but it's runs a few feet then splits into two violet hoses, also notice the grey hose. It is not mentioned in my diagram and I have no idea what it's use is.

Any Ideas Would Be Welcome, Thanks, DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

I dont know where they would go and I dont have a 305 so I couldnt check. But, I would just line up the bolt holes on the brackets to holes on the block. and if they line up, they probably are meant to go there... ill look up some pictures and see if I can find out how they go

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

I appreciate the pic mark, but that is a later model 305 than I have, if you'll not, the altenator is on the drivers side bank. On mine the altenator is on the passenger side bank. So that's one of the reasons it's tough for me to find pics, the old bracket system I have isn't found on very many third-gens, luckily luke has the same bracket system as I do. In fact Luke, I don't know if you are working this sunday, but if you are could let me know, and maybe I could come over right after you get off work and look at your pulley system... once again lol.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Thanks Luke, that'd be pretty sweet. I'm not trying to rush you or anything, I don't have to have the pics until the weekend, so don't feel like you have to get em up tomarrow. Thanks for the pic intrepid. That's a pretty simple looking 350! Hey Luke, I found a 95 eddie baur Bronco, it's green with gold under trim, in fact here's the link: http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/ctd/1507280669.html. I'm thinking something like that would be pretty sweet for my next car. I have come up with a plan to keep my camaro for most of the summer, and then try to sell it in late summer and buy a truck, that way I have fun with my car, and get into somthing more practical for collage, because I don't want to be stuck at collage when it's snowing because I don't have a 4 wheel drive. I'm not trying to copy you.. lol. I've always loved full size bronco's.

Not bad, for half that price you could get this one in Lebanon.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Yeah the one I posted was way overpriced, I just like that paint scheme and engine option the best out of any, in fact I would probably only buy a bronco if it had the options that 95 eddir baur had, although I would have to get different rims and tires and get some locking hubs. School is now half days for me, because it's finals week, so when I get home today I'm probably going to try to do some sanding, and see what's under that passenger side quarter panel. I'll post some pics tonight.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Gun metal grey would look pretty sharp, however; not to try to infulence you either direction, but have you seen vht's new line of metalic engine enamals, they're pretty dang sweet. Here's a build stacy david did with red vht metallic and it's pretty sick. Maybe not for you, but I thought I'd just show you, he paints it about half way through the video.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Alright guys I figured out the p/s and the altenator, I just need to get the a/c pump,I realize I said I'd wait till the weekend but she becones lol. but I still don't know what brackets 3 and 6 do, which kinda means you probably can't help me on bracket 6 Luke, because I think it's an a/c bracket. Anyone though that knows about either of these brackets, give me hand please.

Well, I just logged on to post the pics when I read your last post. I'm sorry I can't help on the a/c brackets. If you get too frustrated with them, I do have a complete serp belt setup off of the parts car that I am still trying to sell. I forgot to mention it when you were here, sorry. It is complete, with all accessories, brackets, and pulleys. I know you have already cleaned and painted your other ones, just throwing it out there.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Finally time for some updates. I swear after four days of work (I had a lot of chores and distractions) not much really gets done. But here we go. I got my belts and such on, as well as the carb, which led me to getting the wiring going. Here's a pic of the how the oxygen sensor wire was orginally supposed to go. Man that right there is some seriously sloppy ****. I don't know what gm was thinking when they did that lol. Anyway I redirected it under the engine. The second pic is just the way I ran the oxygen sensor wire. I guess I shouldn't be talking about sloppy stuff, look at that oily oil pan, and oversprayed steering linkage . Ohh well. The third pic is how I wired my carb, I tried to hide the wiring behind the altenatlor. If you look ing the "frame rail channel" you'll see were my main harness feeds my two split harnesses. It isn't screwed in yet but it will be. Also I realize my carb looks super dirty. I was too cheap at the time to spend 50 bucks on a gallon of dip and dip it, so unfortunatly it looks like crap, it's rebuilt well, and I did use carb cleaner on the internals but I have decided I'm going to have to get a big ol' air filter to cover up the monstrosity. lol.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

I cleaned Marsh out of distilled water . The lady at the counter ask me what it was for. I told her I was deadly allergic to minerals and that regular water could kill me... she believed me! lol. The second pic is of my egr valve right were it belongs lol. And the third is the 1/4 steel I'm going to make my egr block-off plate out of, it came off a pair of westin running boards on my mom's isuzu trooper. I knew it would come in handy.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

And lastly check it out! Dac's got a duel exhaust. To be honest it looks a lot better than expected. The donor car it came off of had them mounted cattywampas so I took some time and got them right, we'll really see if I did when I get it outside. Whoever welded on those tips did a **** poor job, and welded the right one on at a tilt twards the drivers side one. So I took my foot and my hand and pushed them apart and it worked. Welding the exhaust on top while under the car was dang near impossible and I'm not positive I got a complet seal around the top. So I may trying to weld some more on top after I hear it run. Oh and my last pic is the best of all. I finally got revenge on my crappy old computer and it was sweet!!! lol. I broke a good hammer beating the **** out of that thing lol.

Man, that all looks amazing. I wish I had that much time to do that crap on my cars. It looks really good, I like the black engine bay. The exhaust came out really good also. Did you get the inlet pipe welded back on the muffler? I also like the computer pic, it reminds me of "Office Space" when they beat the snot out of the copier.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Thanks Luke, and that might turn into a holly avenger before my days are over Intrepid. I am really... really beginning to regret not turning that 305 into a 350 or 383. I just got done watching gone in 60 seconds, and I really want an actually fast car lol. Just corious, anyone know if you could drop in a 383 and t-5 that were all mated and rebuilt in a weeked. In other words could I take a 305 camaro with a 700r4 and turn it into a 383 w/ a t-5 if I had the 383 and t-5 all preped and rebuilt?

Thanks, Dac

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Wow Dac that engine bay is coming out nice. The one thing I hate when putting in a new engine is the wiring, usually I feel like just cutting it all off and not having to worry about it but I can't. I am gonna see what I can to it to make the wiring and the vacumm hose look good when I install my new engine.
Also if you are gonna do that 383 with t-5, I would perferred going with the t-56. You will have more fun in a 6 speed other then a 5 speed that's in my opinion

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Thanks for the compliments sartasan, Ohh and Like I forgot to answer your question about the exhaust intake on the muffler, yes I got it welded on, but it's not in nearly as deep as it use to be because I could get it any deeper than an inch. Good Idea, I didn't know a t-56 was an option, can you mate a t-56 to a small block?

The LT1 T56 is the better choice. It can basically be bolted up (depending upon your rear main seal type). The LS1 T56 is a little more problematic.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Thanks five7kid, I've been thinking, If you've been following this thread you probably realize I throw any idea I get by you guys, wether it's pretaining to keeping the car, or if I should put certain performance mods on it, if you are getting sick of that I am truly sorry, but, the thing I like about this thread is I can throw all the ideas I have about this project past you guys and you'll give me your opinions. So here is what dac's thinking today, and would like some opinons on, if I were to take and LT1 T56 and mount it to my 305, and then put a 4:19 rear end in, whith positraction, wouldn't I have a somwhat speedy off the like car, that at the same time could get ok highway miles and wot performance due to 6 gears? Lukes probably the only one who knows this but I'm 6'6 and can't fit in any roadster in the world, so I'm limited to bigger cars, but I think it would be kinda cool if I lowered my camaro's stance, put in some subframe rails, and front end supports, as well as doing the mod's listed above. I think I would have a decently handling car, that would be comfortable. Anyways sorry to ramble, just wondering what you all thought?

Not sure where you got that rear end ratio number, but basically you are correct. 3.73 or 4.10 gears can give you very good acceleration off the line while the two overdrive gears of the T56 can maintain decent RPMs and mileage on the highway.

Of course, a 305 isn't going to produce the same results as an LT1 or LS1, but it would still be better than a TH200C.

Yeah the more I thought about that ratio the more I thought... that isn't right. Thanks for the confirmation five7kid.

Hey DacMan. Did you figure out those brackets yet??

if not post some pictures of the mounting holes for those brackets.. maybe someone could look and match them up.

Also I just finished my camaro.. pretty much besides what it needs for safety. Here is the link again. Check it out http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3382110

Good luck

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Up next... Getting this bitch started lol. I tried to turn her over today and no luck. I had the fron lights blinking when I turned the turn signals on, I also heard the fuel pump, but only a few times. I keep switching around wires trying to figure out the problem, I never unhooked the main line off the positive cable, but I did unhook the one of the two lines that run off the positive terminal, also I grounded the negative to the block, and no luck, so I tried the inner fender and no luck either, any ideas?

Thanks, DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Could be a low battery. Check the wire that runs from the battery to the starter. Look for anything disconnected or loose.. Or try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Thanks for the ideas, it isn't a low charge because I charged it before instalation and it's HOT! But bad connections will be what I likely try next. Although I already checked em'. I think My biggest problem Is I have no clue how to ground my battery, there's a main line that I have no clue were it runs, and a smaller gauge other line in which I have no clue were to put. Any ideas?

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

On my car the bigger wire runs to the starter and the smaller to a splitter where everything else electrical is connected and getting power from.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Alright fellers,
Here we go, I decided to get my fender started from were I left off the last time I posted about it, pic 1 is a pic of were I started. Pic 2 is one of the two holes that once held on the door trim. I decided I didn't want the door trim so I wanted to get rid of the hole, Pic 3 is the beggining of how to get rid of an unwanted hole, you have to drill out any bondo from the last paint job so a clean weld can be made. Uhh ohh, dinner time I'll be back to post pics in an hour lol.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Alrighty here we go again,
I got the hole welded over and ground down in pic 1, pic 2 shows how I tapped the welded area down a little, I just needed it to be a little low so I could put a thin coat of bondo over it. BTW if your corious how I tapped that weld down check out my Christmas present in pic 3, there made by Martin. I bought them through Sears, and although I wanted some craftsman hammer and dollies I decided on the Martin because they have wood handles, the craftsman hammers have fibeglass handles with shock absorbing grips, even though I'm no pro, I wanted to feel the shock the hammer had on the metal not deaden it.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

After I got those holes welded up I wiped the pannel down with wax and grease remover, as I did a small area about 2x2 area I would go over the panel with a light, and "pull the light". Although the pannel was very reflective I was able to find any inperfections in the pannel due to the distortion of the light relflecting back to me. Pic 2 is a dent that was obvious before I pulled the light, this is after hammering it as close to even to the surface, so once again a smooth thin layer of bondo can be applied. Pic 3 is the other fender I sanded down with 36 grit today, I need to go over it with 120 like I did the other but for now thats another pannel I can check off the list for overall paint removal. tomarrow is supposed to be sunny and 26 so I might pull the car out and sand the whole thing.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Pic on is the dent shown in the previous post, I went over all the dents with 36 grit to give a good tooth for the bondo to adhere to. I then applied it, Pic 2 prooves that i'll have to be careful when reinstalling my radio antenna so I don 't over torque the spanner nut and crack the bondo. And pic 3 is my overall bondo applications, very straight pannel in the end!

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

After I applied the bondo I waited for about 20 minutes, it's really cold here so it took a while for the bondo to harden up a little, once hard enough that it was no longer maliable with a finger but soft, I cut a lot of the excess bondo off with a cheese grater file like the stanley in Pic 1. After excess bondo was cut I waited about 20 more minutes and then sanded with 80 grit on an orbital sander. Pic 2 shows the dent mention in previous posts, note the low spot indicating a need for a second coat of bondo, I will recoat all layers over bondo at least twice more. Pic 3 is my antenna hole sanded down after the first coat.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Pic 1 is the two holes I welded up after their first and coat sanding. Pic 2 is the orbital sander I'm using for all my bondo shaping, I like it because it's a 5 incher which is small enough for little things, but big enough for big stuff. Also the dust trap keeps the dust down pretty well. Pic 3 is my second coat of bondo applied tomarrow I'll sand that down and go for my third and final coat.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

My last pic is of my engine bay, I still need to do some wire hiding, and some more little things need to be put on, but I should be able to start it like this, which I tried to do, I pulled it out in the drive way and tried to start it and now luck, (BTW I figured out why it wouldn't turn over, helps if it's in drive lol) I primmed it with some gas straight down the primairies, probably about a 3/4 of a pint in all. I don't know why it wouldn't start, I had the distributor bolted down, and I wish it would have been loose so I could have moved it to try to get it close to timed right. Any thoughts, I can hear the fuel pump pumping, but no firing, should I loosed the dirstributor and slowly twist it while turning it over, or do I just not have enough gas to start it, or do I have too little gas to start it, we tried turning it over about 5 times. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, DacMan

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Hey try pulling the spark plugs one at a time. Then grab an insulated screwdriver and take the sparkplug out of the spark plug wire and put the screwdriver in the wire and ground it to the block. Look for a spark. If there isn't a spark then you have an electrical problem.

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

Yeah I thought about doing that yesterday but it is just such a pain to remove the spark plugs, like a serious pain!!!!. Thanks for the compliment on the engine bay!

Re: 350 Swap+Build Thread

What a day,
I decided since today was going to be the warmest day of the week I would sand my camaro down to steel. I woke up at 8:30 and got straight to work. Quick side note, it's 26 degrees here in zionsville . And by the way if anyone ever told you that the steel in steel toed boots gets freezing cold in cold weather and chills you entire foot, belive em' lol. Anyway lets get to the pics. Pic 1 2 and 3 are all of the girl before I start, another side note, if you look at that exhaust and think dang Dac you sure have those thing sticking out far, don't worry I'm goinng to trim them so you can't even see my exhaust.
