Could I pass emmsions with an lt1
since my car has a 305 wouldent it fail the visual inspection since there isnt a 305 lt1(assuming the inspector knew this)

check your state laws, here in pa you can swap a motor as long as its from a newer style car, an lt1 puts out less emissions cuase it is a more efficiant motor, so as long as the inspection part passes, you should never have a problem passing emmisions

Car: '85 Z28
Engine: 396ci LT1
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 4th Gen rear with 4.10s/Eaton posi
Well...unless the person doing the inspection knows anything about cars...how would he know what displacement you've got under those heads and intake? He/she wouldn't...
All you've got to say is...yeah it's stock. It's that easy...

I think most states are like Calif. in that
you can go to a newer engine in an older car, but not vice versa. In Cal you have to
take your car to a referee for any engine swap. You basically tell the inspector that you have upgraded your 89 to a 95, or whatever year the engine is. The other thing is for emissions you need to swap in everything, ecm, harness, sensors, etc. You can't mix and match emissions control parts. If you live in a state where they don't look that close, it might pass regardless.

I don't know about Virginia, but the laws here in Ct are the the same as Pa where you can swap in any newer engine into an older car. Call your motor vehicles department and/or the emissions stations to find out the specific restrictions on your car.
Up here we don't have visuals so I went ahead and stripped the emissions equipment down to just a good cat. However, I still maintain all the parts and wiring in a box just in case that law ever changes.

1991 RS LT1
every imaginable bolt-on, ungodly LT1 355, and 12 pounds of intercooled boost on it's way in '01
2000 C5 Coupe
black/black 6-spd, optional polished rims, first run 13.056 @ 109.52 stock
"So what DOES the back of a Mustang look like?"
