easiest way.

I have a 85 trans am with a 5 speed. When swapping motors without the benifit of a lift, is it easier to just unbolt the transmission from the bell housing? or to disconnect the whole thing at the driveshaft, and yank it all. like i said, ill be on my back for underbody work. so any suggestions would help. Also, the motor I am swapping has about 30k on it, so what would be the best time to use synthetic? right after the first 20 min oil change? or should I wait the couple thousand miles? Thanks.

It's almost a wash. Leaving the tranny in will require some means of holding the front of it up while the engine is out. Taking it out with the engine requires unhooking more things. Personally, I'd recommend taking the tranny out with the engine, and I do everything underneath on my back like you will be. Using a tilt sling makes the job much easier, especially when pulling/stabbing the engine with the tranny attached.

As for the oil, I would recommend dumping what's in it and changing the filter, and filling it with 4 qts petroleum oil and 1 pt engine flush. Run it that way without driving it for 20-30 minutes, then drain and change the filter, and fill with synthetic. This will help remove any sludge and varnish that have accumulated in the engine from the 30k of petroleum oil. If you don't flush first, the synthetic will loosen that stuff up and dirty itself more quickly.

I've been doing it this way for over 17 years, using AMSOIL products, with engines with about the same miles as yours to much more.
