400 sbc power question
400 sbc power question
I'm about to start building a 400 sb, and was wondering what eveyone thought about this setup and how much power it would make:
406 w/ forged pistons
Brodix Aluminum heads: 69 cc chambers 170int.
244int 254ex @50 cam with 510 533 lift
Victor Jr intake
Hooker Super Comp Headers w/ full exhaust
@250 shot of NOS with complete fuel system
I dont' know which carb to go with but you get the point. Do you think this is a good setup? Also if anyone knows where i can find a block for cheap, please let me know.

Very nice combo, but with that cam you need some good gearing, i would say at least 3.73 and a good stall. i would go with 3200-3500 at least. Also, brodix makes nice heads, but those are too small. 400's need to breathe and 170cc intake isn't even big enough for a built 350. I would go with something around 200cc or 215cc since you have a high reving cam and a victor jr.
Do you think the Trick Flow 23 degree heads would be better with this setup: 195cc intake runners 64 72cc chambers( I could still port and polish these up pretty good since they are cheaper than the Brodix's)
I want a lower compression motor that handle a lot of spray, but still tear *** without it.
A six speed out of a camaro will be behind this motor with 4:10's.
What would be a good carb to go with?
thanks
chris

This is true.. you will need better heads than that... You might want to save yourself about $300 and go with the Pro Action Iron Lighting heads. They have 210cc and flow 271 @ 600 lift out of the box. For around $800 you can not beat them.
Here are the flow numbers for the Iropn lightining heads and the websight to check them out http://www.procylinderheads.com/

The best flowing Edelbrock intake is a Super Victor. To tell you the truth I would go with a Holley 750 with this set up. You can do alot more than you think with a 750. You wouldn't need an 850 till you got a 12.1 406 with at least a 260 @.050 solid roller cam. Before you choose a carb though you need to think about tuneablity. A vacuum secondary carb you can tun the secondaries to open slower or faster but with a double pumper it is easier to change the jetting in the rear because it uses jets instead of a meatering plate so you have more control over your set up. If you don't want to be messing with the carb all the time then go with a vacuum secondary if you like to tinker with your tune up then go with the more adjustable bouble pumper.
