just got a 305 carb w/350 turbo.....if I change heads, can I run my TBI?
OK, I found a carbed 305 with a turbo 350 tranny.I intend to put them in my 91RS. My question is if the block the same as a 305 TBI? That is, can I change the heads and use the EFI off the blown engine(I will buy new heads, like trick flow's 23*heads) I dont want to have to buy another motor because this one has new crank, rods, pistons, and valves. They(the motor & trans.) were given to me by a friend, and would like to use them w/the TBI from the scrapped motor, so I can run the car in stock form for the time being.(I wont have the cash to do any serious RICE BASHING untill next summer) In short, What do I have to do to run the TBI on this motor? What if I put aftermarket heads on that were intended for EFI engines? I hope I explained this so it makes sense. You all have helped alot, and I appreciate it. thanks. BTW when are we going to to have our chat room up? Then these discussions can be a little more one on one.

Thanks, I hoped that would work. You are right, I did make it sound like it was blown (supercharged)instead of blown up.

I just put a TH350 in my wifes 82 Z28 and it went right in with no problems. Of course her car was an origina th200 car so the crossmember and driveshaft were the same. The B&M kit made the torque are easier than the stock mounting. The only thing that is sortof difficult is the speedo cable. there is a small hole in the B&M bracket to put it in but htere is no way to get a good grip on it to tighten it up. But hey where there is a will there is a way...
One problem you might have is the aftermarket heads on the 305 is the combustion chamber size. A 305 has a 58cc combution chamber and a 350 has a 76 or a 64 (depending on the head). If you go with an after market head you will more than likley have to have them milled down to a 58 CC chamber so you can have some simbalence of compression (I kind of figured you didn't want to try and run around with a 7.0 compression motor). Other than that all the 305 blocks are the same up till 86 when the 1 peice rear main seal motors came out and even then the only differances are in the rear main seal, oil pan, flywheel/flexplate, and the crank everything else is the same.

Thanks for the help. Let me make sure I get this right. The block is an '83, and it will take the 23* trick flows for a '91? That is what I intend to do.Justtrying to make sure that I get My info right because I sometimes misunderstand what Im told

What kind of tranny do you have in it now T-5/700R4? Why not just reuse your current tranny? The most you'd need is a flywheel designed for a ealier (2 piece rear main seal) block and maybe a new clutch if it's a T-5 and your's is worn out?
The TH350 tranny WILL need a different driveshaft.

If you have not bought the heads (the Trick flows) then you might consider this. If you want to go "Rice bashing" for the price of those heads you can build a 350 with factory heads to do the job for now. If you raly want to have some fun you can get a stock dished, cast piston 350 and put your 305 heads on it with the Summit 214/224 @.050 cam ($89 cam and lifter kit) and have a good low 14 second car. You could even put a 125 shot of nitrous on it and run in the low 13's to high 12's all for the same price as those Trick flow heads you are talking about. While you are out "Rice Bashing" with this combo you can be building a good high performance motor to go "5.0 bashing".......Just a little food for thought.
Thanks for the advice. I never even thought of just using happy gas instead of the heads. But after looking on the net and in catalogues, it seems that you are right. I could get a stock 350 and add the happy gas for little more than the heads alone. One question, will the 700r4 take that much HP? That is why I was going to install the th350. Thanks for the help guys.

I'm currently running the stock 700-R4 tranny, in my car (check sig for info). I have a 2500 stall converter and I added a tranny cooler. But it's still a stock tranny. I plan on going with a bigger cam in a month or so and then adding nitrous by the end of the year. I still plan on keeping the same tranny. It's held up pretty good. I've had the motor in the car for a little over a year now. I think my tranny has been rebuilt sometime within the life of the car though.
You'll like the 4th gear with the 700, if you drive it a lot. The TH350 doesn't have an overdrive. It won't be revved up all the time and will help get you a little better gas mileage with it.
If you use an older pre-86 motor, you'll need to get a different flywheel. The 91 is for 1 piece seal motor. Pre-86 are a two piece. They are cheap though.

The 700R4 is a power robber but does make the daily comute much nicer when you have 4.11's or more gear. The only problem with the 700 though is in stock form it is a weak transmission. A TH350 with just a shift kit will work forever behind a 500 HP big block so you will not hurt it. Hell we had one behind a 585HP big block and never had any troubles with it. On teh other hand I have killed 2 700R4's within a years time behind a mild 305 in a 83 Z28 that I used to have.
