Passkey/airbag issues w/ engine swap
Passkey/airbag issues w/ engine swap
Hi,
I'm considering a TBI 305 to TPI swap for my '92 Camaro. I have a few conserns.
First, is the Pass Key Theft Deterent system part of the CPU or is it an individual modual. Basically, I'm wondering if I would need to get a recoded key to start the car after swapping in the new motor and CPU. The same question goes for the air bag controle.
This leads me to my next question. If I wanted to put an engine from an '87 - '89 TPI car, would that effect my Pass Key and Air bag controle. Not that either of these are a big deal, but I like to keep full functionality in my car, and there was neither Pass Key (87 & 88) or air bag in these engines.
Third, my state isn't sniffing tail pipes yet (!), but if they started, would they have a problem with an older TPI motor in my '92? I know that '87 thru '89 were MAF cars, and '90 thru '92 were MAP cars. Would the state care if I had MAF in a MAP car?
And finally, will a MAP engine be more troublesome to modify (heads, stroked, cam, etc)? If so, is there a realatively simple way around it (custom PROM)?
Thanks

I just completed that swap myself '92 RS TBI to TPI.
(1) The pass key module is seperate but it sends a signal to the ECM.
(2)You should go with S/D since your '92 is setup for it.
(3) It's a federal law you can't go backwards (ie.'89 to '92)
(4)Mods to a map car do require a custom chip.
(5) It is possible to use the TBI harness with a 730 ECM as that is what I just did.
You need wiring diagrams and some experience wouldn't hurt. I got all of mine from shop manuals. Oh, and the school of hard knocks.
Good Luck,

P.S Mine is running great I love it!!!

Thanks for the info!
Now, is the injector harness a seperate part of the wiring harness. I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I think that I remember my '88 TPI harness as being one piece. I had the entire harness hooked up to the motor before I dropped it in. Now, it did have all of the wire wrap on it, so I may have missed the connectors. Did they significantly change the harness for the Speed Density cars?
Did you bother rigging up dual fans? My '88 ran fine with the single fan and radiator that supplied "cool" to the TBI (hung around 180-190 deg).
You said that the Pass key sends a signal to the ECM, is that just a "go" signal, or does it have anything to do with the coded signal?
Thank you for all your info!

(1)Yes they did make big changes, but it is all one piece.
(2)No I stayed with one fan it works just fine (180-190).
(3)Just a go signal.

OK, Sorry to be daft, but since the harness is one piece, how did you use the TBI harness with the single injector conection to hook up the 8 injectors of the TPI? I am not doubting you, I just don't quite see the hole picture.
Thanks again!

Ok, here's the whole picture: http://24.1.139.249/images/122000/DCP_0108.JPG
If you were to open the harness you would see two groups of wires, the 4 inj. on the left go to a conn. that is green, the 4 on the right go to a conn. that is blue. The inj. are batch fired, the green wire from the TBI goes to the green group, the blue wire from the TBI goes to the blue group. So....... you just splice them.
