383 Stroker

Ok I apologize now for the lenght of this post. I have a 305 TBI and have decided on a 383 Stroker, either crate or build myself using the crates platform, which claims 450 hp. It will take me awhile to get the 383, and I want to make upgrades to the 305 that will still work with the 383. So my ?'s are as follows.
Which tranny should I look into and which rearend should I match up to it?
Will most headers and cat-back systems work with the 383?
I live in Cali but I am in the military and my car is currently registered in Cali but I will be registering my car in my home state, am I still required to prove that my car is smoggable?
Last but not least, common sense tells me to replace the rearend prior to the exhaust so I do not have to drop the exhaust when I replace the rearend. Am I correct in assuming this.
Thanks in advance for any and all help

Take a look at my 383 combination on my web site. It wasn't "smoggable", or streetable, but it is close to what you want.

Tranny and rear end all depends on what you want to do with the car. Drag racing with 2.73 gears and an OD tranny isn't the right combination. It's the same as 4.10 gears and a 2 speed powerglide won't work good for a daily driver.

A 383 is just a stroked 350 so all the 350's exhaust system will work fine. 1 5/8 headers are all that's required for street use. I even used them on my race car with no problems. You'll actually lose power by using 1 3/4" headers on the street. The engine rpms won't go high enough to utilize the larger tubes. Anything is better than factory manifolds but bigger isn't always better.

The rear end vs. exhaust thing goes the other way, the rear is in the way of changing the exhaust.

The 305 and 383 are identical externally. All bolt holes, dimensions, etc. are the same. So any headers that will fit the one, will fit the other as well.

AFAIK your smog regs have to do with licensing. I live in CA a few blocks down the street from where you are but my cars are still registered in TN, so that's the smog regs they pass. Some of them will no doubt meet CA specs but some equally no doubt won't.

I don't think you'll have to worry too much about having 450 HP, or tearing up rears, if you keep the TBI. Hopefully you'll be able to do better than that.

Thanks for the info so far. Here is the link to the 383 I am refering to http://www.musclecarengines.com/c38.htm sorry not computer savy enough to link it. There is a few changes I would make but its the basic build up of it. I know it would be cheaper to do myself, but what do you guys think of the price to include the turn key package.

I too am feeling your pain. I just brought my 84 z28 from Hawaii where the only thing you have to pass is a safety inspection but when I took it to the base to get a pass they said I had to pass a smog check first.
The 383 is a great idea that I share with you. The only thing I could come up with was go down pass the smog, then yank the motor out, swap it and repeat the process in two years. let me know if you come up with a better idea, I'm all ears.

Imark, this is what I came up with. I bought the car from a dealer, therefore it is currently smogged. Once I recieve the tags I will get my permanent base sticker with the california registration. Then I will register it in my home state, which only reguires a form and a copy of my title. Check on the web for your home state DMV and how to reg it there, some states require to see the car physically. Currently base does not require you to prove it has been smogged once you have the sticker, unless it expires. Technically even if the vehicle is registered in a different state it still has to be smoggable by Cali laws. So there is a possabilty of getting a ticket if a cop pulls you over and wants to be a jack*ss. I work at a 7-11 part time and talk to cops all the time. Even aftermarket exhaust that claims it is legal in 50 states, truley isn't legal. If its loader than stock its illegal, but then again almost all harleys would be illegal then, depends on the cops mood I guess. This is just my two cents on smog and doesn't really apply to my subject though.
