400 swap shop cost and question about Steam Holes
400 swap shop cost and question about Steam Holes
I'm 19 years old and have a 91 Camaro Z28. Its a 305 TPI. I'd like to have a 400 put in by this summer. I was just curious to see what cost I'm looking at for this engine swap at a performance shop. I want a mild build up, nothing too fancy. I'd love to hear from anyone who had one built for them, and the cost, and the results they got. Also I want to know what are the best heads to use for the lowest price. Keep in mind I wana keep the TPI setup on it, and not go carb. Thanks for any help.

Check my sig for my new motor. I am doing the build up myself and not paying someone else.
Costs vary on what parts you are going to use and what you have laying around.
Buy I'll try.
Block $100
Bore/Hone w/TQ plate $180
(If you have to deck the block $80?
Line hone the block $200?)
Resize the stock rods $96
Press off and on pistons $40
Balance complete rotating assembly $130-230
New Iron eagle heads $850
Holley Intake $115
Speed demon carb $469
Rings and bearings $120
Misc fasteners??? $200
So far my build up has cost me. A minumum of $2500.
Granted the heads, & carb are new. You could get away cheaper if you used stock heads and a rebuilt holley.
I hope I haven't scared you off. I am building a race motor so I have put some extra money in to it I probably could have left out for a street motor. I am not running a high compression motor or any thing exotic, But I don't think it would last for a 100,000 street miles eithor.
Now that I have seen the benefits of the bigger is always better theory, My 355,and all other 350's will delagated to towing detail.
