305 to 350 HO:keep comp.?:exhaust manifolds?
I'm swapping a 305 4bb out of my 86 TA to a 350 HO. If I wanted to could I keep my computer if I get a different chip, just to keep it legal? If not should I get different exhaust manifolds? I'm asking because I just got new exhaust(from cat back) put on about 3 monts ago. Another thing, could you use the same stock intake and carb on that block? I know it will fit but will it work o.k. until i get the money to upgrade? Sorry about all the ?'s but I'm on a tight budget right now. Thaks for any replies

Everything will swap except the intake manifold. The 350ho has vortec heads which require only 4 intake bolts a side at different angle. The standard is 6 on a side. So you'll need a different intake manifold like the performer from edelbrock or the zz4 take off from sdpc (only $130 and is aluminum). The carb will bolt right up, the only problem I see is maybe the computer chip. Your car has EGR and the vortec heads don't. So with the stock chip you MIGHT have ping from predetonation at higher rpm because of non egr. The chip advances the timing more at higher rpm because the intake is warmer and won't detonate prematurely. I think it should be fine though until you get a new chip. The 350ho is exactly what I'm putting into my 91RS, I'm keeping the TBI system and just using a 670cfm holley unit. Should be making some good hp and totally streetable.

J, are you sure about the ZZ4 takeoff? Those are the alumium heads, not Vortecs (p/n for Vortec intake is 12496820 - spread bore w/EGR, or 12366573 - square bore; ZZ3 & ZZ4 is 10185063). I have a ZZ3 intake in the garage, it is identical to the "standard" intake for port matching and bolt holes. The Vortec heads also have a different location for the ports, which is a bigger deal than the number of bolts holding it on.
86, check the magazine articles by Steve Green (at the bottom of the page). He did a 383, and had his carb & PROM done by Jet. I know you're talking about a budget; but there are good places to spend money, which are also known as bad places not to spend money. You're already shelling out some good change for the 350, don't skimp in important places. On that note, I wouldn't even talk about "exhaust manifolds". Headers are the only thing to consider.
Until the money is available to optimize things, you can make your stock ECM and exhaust manifolds work (although pinging might be an issue w/no EGR). But, the intake manifold is a must change with the HO's Vortec heads, like J said.

So either they didn't print it right or what but the picture has the vortec bolt pattern.

I don't think they printed it right. They list the ZZ4 type correctly in the other site you mentioned in the other post.
ZZ4 and Vortec are most definately not the same or compatible.

I'm in the process of doing the same swap. I need EGR to keep my car legal, so what intake manifold can I get that will keep the EGR? I was told I dont have to change out the computer until I swap gears later, but for now, I need to get an intake manifold with the EGR provisions. Are there any that go on the 350 HO?
