Going shopping for a junkyard 350 for my 86 TPI. What do I look for?
OK Guys I decided I am going to build a 350 to replace my old worn out 305. I would like to know what should I be looking for. Truck engine, car engine? Make model year or casting numbers. Basically i am just looking for a 350 motor that will drop right in place of the 305 and hook up to the 86 TPI intake and stuff. Please help I need to do this quick.

At the very least, pull off the heads and oil pan in the junkyard. look for fragged pistons and bottom end. Also try to turn the engine over with a big breaker bar before disassembling it, if it turns over, chances are it is good. as far as the efi stuff, it is my understanding you can put that on any small block, i could be wrong.
i only give the advice about pulling the motor apart because it happened to my when i was young and stupid.

if you just wanna drop it in get a car motor
if you are willing to do a cam swap get a truck or van motor because they are more likely to have 4bolt mains
ya take the pan off if they'll let you and most definately check the compression
as far as I know the EFI should bolt up no prob
If you can't take off the pan or do a compression check pick one from a car that looks stock(no big ram air hood scoops and such), and has clean oil.
you don't want to buy a motor that has been run to death I'm guessing
good luck and have fun
I just did the same hunt and just finished building a 320hp 355 for a total cost of $400 canadian(the fact that I work at a high performance shop does help cut costs)

look for something with 8-cylinders.
j/k
ask the place. around here they have motors they knew were good and already removed them. I hope you are going to rebuild it right? It is hard to check a block without it being on a stand. At least check the lifter valley and make sure there is no cracks there.

I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT
1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package with 64cc aluminum heads, dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, ASCD SS hood, 16" IROC rims.
future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames, Hurst shifter, dakota digital gauge package, procharger supercharger.
