Best/Cheapest way into the low 13's
Best/Cheapest way into the low 13's
I have a 305TPI Z28 right now, and I really want my car to be in the 13's this summer. In everyones opinion here what is the best route to take? Also let me add this, I want it to run 13's naturally aspirated. Also I want to keep the TPI on for fuel effec. and emmisions. Now I figure ditching the 305 would be first. I'd imagine a 350 would be the way to go. I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this, and the amount to spend. I'm just looking for the best bang for the buck. Thanks to anyone who can give me some ideas.

Keeping the TPI will definately increase the bucks per bang.
You're probably looking at 383 or 406, Miniram and siamesed runners, 58mm TB, 24 lb injectors, AFPR, ZZ9 cam w/1.6 roller rockers, AFR 200 heads, 1-3/4" primary SLP headers, dual cats, 3" cat back, w/custom chip to make all that work. You'll also need sub-frame connectors. You didn't mention tranny, assuming you have auto, get a built Th700 w/Vigilante (sp?) convertor (at least $2000 for the tranny/conv alone). Get a good shifter while you're at it.
How are you going to get that power to the ground? Better have 3.73 gears at least & posi, poly bushings, LCA lowering mounts, best to have a Spohn torque arm kit, some pretty good tires.
I hope you have at least six-seven grand to spend.
Actually, I don't think Minirams have provision for EGR, so you're hosed on emissions anyway. You might still make it with an Edelbrock or Accel base.
I'm not sure I've ever seen somebody go from 16's to 13's in one shot (except perhaps with NOx). Most people work up to it. I saw a guy put his 12.0-sec, 115-mph ride into the wall at the end of the track this past Friday: he'd been working up to that speed, on that car, for the past 30 years (and that's not an exaggeration). Hope you have a helmet.

Thanks for taking the time to list everything and for the sugestions. As for me dropping so far so fast, trust me I'll do it. My car now BONE STOCK runs a 15.01, I'm only asking for a 1 1/2 - 2 sec drop. And by upping to a 350 a min, gears, and a few upgrades and additions I think I could easily have it. As for me being able to handle the cars drop from 15 to 13, I'm sure I can handle it. I've driven 13 sec 300ZX's and LS1 Trans Ams, so I'm sure it wont be a thing. Hitting a wall is the least of my worries, I just want that clock to read 13's.
Another thing is I dont see why everyone on this site dis' the stock TPI soooo much. Trust me I understand it has limits, but I'm sure 13's arnt it. I mean I was looking in an old car craft in an EFI article. Some guy and his son had a 69 Camaro with a TPI 350 in it, stock computer running 12.9's. The runners, intake, etc all looked stock. All I saw performance wise was it had a cam, and some Eddlebrock heads. I really beleive it shouldn't cost SOOO much to get these cars in the 13's. I believe way to many people waste alot of money on BS parts like chips, trottle bodies, etc. They do all that and then get mad when the car wont gain more than a few tenths. Dont get me wrong I believe these are all smart upgrades but you need something to go along with all that. I want to get a 350, slap some decent heads on it, get some junk yard inectors, fuel pres. reg, cam, stall, gears and subframe conector. I cant see me not running 13's. I'll get into all the nity grity stuff when I want the 12's but 13's shouldn't be so much work. Please everyone don't take this as a ****y unexperienced opinion, becuase I know it probably sounds that way. But I truely think it can be done, and I'd love to hear anyones opinion.

Thanks for the support Jarrad, I really hope I do get there. I really want to run with all my LT1, and LSI friends, and restore some respect to the third gens. Around here where I live, I've never seen many that can run.
Settle down people. The stock TPI has limits, but you're right, it certainly isn't 13's. Stock, 3rd gens put out marginally above 200 HP. Just build yourself a nice solid small block with about 9 or 9.5 to 1 compression and a decent cam, set of heads, etc. Make the engine good for about 300-350 horsies. Upgrade the headers while you're at it, because it's a lot easier then once the engine's in the car, and it will need done. Then run it, and see where it's at. I'd probably change the gears to 3.73's or 4.11's; with the 700R4, it won't cost you a lot in the gas mileage. Then run it and see where it's at. From that point, I'd assume you'd be well into the 13's without even pissing with the TPI, but to make it much faster - you'll have to start addressing the issues with the injection system.
Have fun

Thanks for the support and the advice, but it looks now like I'm gonna have to hold off on this whole upgrade for MCSE Computer classes (DAMN THEY'RE EXPENSIVE). Oh well when its over I can still do it
