*******Need info on Vortec Heads**********

I am about to buy a set of vortec heads with the casting #906. Does this sound right. Is there another vortec head better than these, if so what casting #. Any info will help.

There are two casting numbers for the L31 Vortec heads, 906 and 062. They're both the same as far as I know, the 062s are just the new casting number they're using (or maybe I've got it backwards, I forget).

You buying new? If not how much are you paying? With some freshening on used heads you may not be coming out ahead at all over the $420ish new cost... What kind of cam are you wanting to run? The stockers will take around .480 as the max lift you will want to run on the springs and without doing some clearancing. However, Scoggin Dickey sells a set w/ springs and the clearancing required to run around .550 lift. They run around $550 last I saw, so a little over $100 over standard vortecs...

Does any one know the size of these (64cc?). I am not sure what cam I am running yet, but nothing stock. The heads are dirt cheap and I am going to get alot of work done to the heads anyway, so why buy new unless it already has all the machine work done.

Is this the only vortec head made? Is 906 or the 062 better?

Go to www.mortec.com
They have lists of all of the casting #'s.
From what they show the 906's are 96 & up.
The 062's show 1998. They both have the same size intake and exhaust valves, 1.94" int. 1.50" exh. and they both show 170cc int runners. It's the 059's and the 502's that you gotta stay away from. They're 305 heads w/ 1.84" int. valves. Not bad, but just not as much flow. And yes they are both 64cc chambers. One little tip, Chevy High Performance had a machine shop back cut the exhaust valves 30 deg. and it gave them about a 10-15 hp increase. Find out what someone would charge you for that.

I have the 906's and I am very pleased with them. I had the valves back cut 30 degrees and a 5 angle valve job done to them. I am using the XE 268 comp cam. I see that you are from Illinois. I got my valve job done in Southern Illinois. I don't know how far you are from Metropolis Illinois but the guy that did mine is very good. He charged me $150 for the valve job and back cutting the valves and also setting up spring pressure on them. If you are interested e-mail me and I can get you his 1-800 number.
