LS1 into 3rd gen?

Well, it's time to give the 89 RS a little more balzz. I want to do a LS1/T56 in place of the TBI 350/700r4 currently there. Has anyone done the swap? What fits and what doesn't? Can aftermarket longtube headers be used? What about airbox design? I don't beleive the stock front mounted airbox will fit in a 3rd gen. Also, I want to retain the A/C will I need a custom bracket to move the compressor somewhere? Any good sites on the swap?

That should about cover it.
As for your questions about what will fit... Anything that doesnt fit (like the headers and airbox) are easy fixes with cubic dollars or other substitutes.

Yeah, I've seen that one guys site that posted in the 1st thread, but it didn't go very in depth, just said he did the swap basically. If fabbing engine mounts is all I have to worry about it's a definate go. Does Painless Wiring make an LS1 harness? That would make the swap go a lot better... I'll definatly use the T56, might need a custom cross member. I think it will be a cool swap if done correctly, and the car isn't my daily driver or anything, so I don't have to worry about how long it takes.

For the cost of an LS1 swap, do you know what kind of FIRE BREATHING 406 you could build? Holy $hit, the thought of putting that much money into a 406 puts the fear in me...

I'm setting the car up for road track action, the aluminum block helps the weight distribution a good bit, and the LS1 with light mods will run with the heavier 406 and get better gas mileage to boot. Plus, since I am a rebuilder I can buy a wrecked LS1 car cheap and part it out after I yank the drivetrain, so the swap will probably cost less than building a 406.

Lemme know if you find a '97+ dash/console out of a Camaro, or leather seats.

I drove one of the new Z06 Corvettes today, and $hit, what a fast SOB! Several hundred pounds lighter and another 40 HP! The LS1 isn't too far behind! Just ported LS1 heads, exhaust, LS6 intake, and computer work...MAN! You know, I heard GM sells a upgraded computer for LS1's that contain the -road racing- program. Supposed to up an LS1 to around 400 HP. Put a blower on the motor above, get around 600 HP and good mileage!

I'm going to try to get my car down to 3000#'s or so, and I will probably slide a cam in when I have the motor out, I'll check into the road racing computer Thanks for the idea
