ZZ4 to 1988 IROC Cvt.
Thanks to the other members for the solid info on the ZZ4 engine swap. I thought I had done all the homework but missed the reverse rotation on the water pump. I just tore the car down yesterday. I have the serpentine belt system so I guess the reverse direction probably applies to me. I had been going by the GM instructions for the switch on a carb intake 1987 305 - didn't notice the belts. Any other potential pitfalls that I might run into? I will have to pass smog in Ca. and am doing the Corvette EGR w/ legal headers. Thanks in advance.
I assume this is a TPI swap if so you will need to take the distributor gear off and swap it with the ZZ4 distributor.

With regards to the need to change the distributor gear from the ZZ4 distributor to the 305 TPI distributor:
It turns out that according to the parts folks at my GM dealer that the 1988 TPI 305 has the correct gear already in place (they have the same GM part #'s). This possibility is backed by GM in their 1987 Camaro 305 (carburated) ZZ4 swap info sheet -some distributors do not need to have the gear changed. The exact wording is as follows:
" If you are installing an H.O. engine (ZZ4) in a 1987 LG4 Camaro, the distributor already has the correct gear. If you are installing an H.O. engine in a 1983-86 L69 or 1982-1986 LG4 you must replace the distributor drive gear as shown." Suffice it to say that there are some exceptions to the rule. I am assuming that the GM parts person is correct but in the face some of the misinformation I have received from GM lately - I think I'll change the gear. Thanks.
