327 exchange
327 exchange
I think i've decided on a 327 to match with my world class T-5 to put in my 91 camaro. I need to know if early 327's will bolt right into my car, or what i can do to make a 327 bolt into my car. I also would like to know if my 305 heads will bolt on. All input is appreciated.

the motor will bolt right in to the stock location no problem. if you plan on running tpi on a 327 i would highly suggest getting a mini-ram cause 327s like to rev, and a stock tpi would choke a 327. if your going carb then youve got nothing to worry about. and yes, your heads will bolt up.
Somebody at a engine shop said that i would have to get a new flywheel(early model) then, redrill holes in it to make my pressure plate fit onto it. Is this true? I found an old 327, it would fit into my car right? Will the knock sensor and oil pressure sender hook up?

It will bolt right up, no problems there. The only possible problem will invole a starter bolt hole: the starter for the T-5 setup requires one that does not exist on older blocks. It's fairly easy to drill it, just be aware that it might be needed. Give the block and the starter to a good machine shop, they should be able to take care of it.
You will need another flywheel. The one from a 82-85 V8 Camaro is the right thing. It shouldn't be too hard to find one of those in a junkyard. It will bolt to the 327 crank and your clutch will bolt right to it. Don't forget to put a pilot bearing in the crank.
The knock sensor goes into the block's coolant drain hole, which the 327 of course has. It will also have the holes for oil prerssure senders and switches, as those are (and always have been) required during the block's manufacturing process.

Is $350 for a 327 short block core a good price, or could i go cheaper trying to part one together myself? Is my 305 a 1 or 2 piece rear main seal and what would the 327 be?

your 305 has a 1 piece rear main seal
the 327 has a 2 piece rear main seal
the 1 piece seals didn't start production until sometime in 1986 i believe.
as long as that 327 core hasn't been bored, and is structurally sound, i would say $350 for a short block isn't too bad. but then again, i guess it depends on where you live, and whether you want it bad enough.
by the way, a 327 in a z28 sounds like a fun vehicle. keep us posted.

Just a question why would you mess up an LE1. Those cars are so rare why would you do this to one. I would gladly trade you my 305 auto 91 z. It isn't in bad shape and I would baby the le1 the rest of it's life and you wouldn't have to let a rare le1 be changed. There are a lot of 305 auto z's out there so you shouldn't feel bad. Please don't do this to an LE1... or just sell the le1 and buy another z and have cash to spend on a new engine.
