I want to start planning my 2.8 to v8 swap? Please Help!

I am only 16 but i want to get rid of my v6.I have a 1985 firebird with the 2.8.My gramps would probably help me in a bout a year when i hopefully do this.If i go from efi to carb will i still be able to use a tranny that was originally mated to a efi v8. I was just wonderin this today and wanted to ask.
What i was going to do was get a 700r4 from a boneyard but buy a carbed crate engine between 250-300 hp.I dont want something with a $hitoad of hp b/c i dont want to kill myself.
So pretty much the biggest things i need are the engine, trans,.and radiator right?
Thanks also any suggestions on some engines would be nice?

Good luck kido, its going to be ALOT of money. I highly suggest sellng the car as is, and buying a car origionally equipped with a V8 for probably the same price, and then just having it painted or something. I recently switched from a 350 to a 350 and believe me its expensive even if you do the work yourself. The little things add up. But if you are going to do it you made the right choice by asking about it on here.

And yes all GM tranny's that are made for 8 cylinders will fit on other 8 cylinders. Your going to need all kinds of other stuff then just an engine and a trans. There's too much to list.

The first thing you need to find is an '85 FB with factory V8 from which to pull all the parts you're going to need (the engine doesn't have to be any good since you're getting a crate engine, but it does have to be complete). Then, take pictures of both cars before you take anything off, label everything as it is removed, take more pictures as you go, and start moving things onto your driver.

Since you're buying another car anyway, the best approach is to do what IROC says - sell what you've got and get a factory V8 car. Even if you put the crate engine in it, you'll be dollars ahead.

Nobody is saying "don't do it" or "it can't be done", or "it's too hard". Obviously, it can and has been done (see sig in above post).

The point is, it isn't economical, especially if you have emissions to worry about. There is only so much value to being able to say "I did it myself", and this isn't one of those situations, unless you have a particularly nice V6 car with sentimental value, or some other reason to spend more money than what the car will be worth when you're done or what you would spend getting a factory V8 car.

Your own admission of having difficulty finding a transmission just drives the point home further (no transmission isn't stopping you? You must get tired pushing it around).

Also didn't realize they were still putting 2.8's in '93's...
