what flex plate to use on 383?
I have a 383 that is externally balanced and it came with a 168 tooth flexplate. Do I need a 153 tooth externally balanced flexplate for a 400 crank? I want to use the stock starter that came on my 86 camaro and I will be using a 700r4 trans. The car came with a 153 tooth flexplate on a 5.0 LG4.
Anyone know what flexplate will work? Part #????
Thanks.

If your 383 is a 2-piece rear main seal externally balanced set-up, a 153-tooth flexplate for a 400 crank will work with your engine and stock starter.

What transmission are you using? Do you know what year of block it is? The reason I ask this is it will determine what starter you use.
In the past depending on those things you would have to drill/tap the block to get the correct starter to work. However I did find out you can use a starter off a 99 chevy truck and it has the correct bolt pattern, the correct offset for the 400 flywheel and the smaller nose cone to fit inside the 700R4 bellhousing. It's one of the good things GM did for us.

Re: what flex plate to use on 383?
i used a 1 piece block on my 383 and the 153 tooth flexplate off my 305 would have worked but i had to buy a new starter cause it wouldnt turn over the new motor any way (high Compression) so i used the 168 tooth.
just sum more food for thought.
