You really can't expect an exact answer with the inexact information you gave. It really depends upon what cam/carb/intake AND heads you put on each engine, and those recommendations would depend upon what you have for transmission/drivetrain and what you expect to do with this car after you got it together. The exhaust system is also a major player in the whole package.

You can get 300 streetable horses out of a 305 with a higher stall torque converter if auto, and/or higher ratio gears for the rear (you can see what I've got in the works in my sig). Or, you can get well over 375 streetable horses out of a 350 with the same other changes.

So, to get an informed answer to your question, you need the potential respondant to be more informed.

BTW, do you really have an '89 RS with a 307?

Yes, I really do have an 89 RS with an Olds 307 and an olds TH-350 Tranny. But i think i have cracked a head on it. But i'm gonna put a different motor and transmission in it regardless of if the engine is blown or not. I am plannin on attaching it to a TH-350 Chevy tranny and probably a 305 motor. And the cam/carb/intake package is gonna be the edlebrock one, Torker...and it's gonna not be an all out drag car or anything, just a beefed up street ride. That help anymore?

Very much so.

Unless you already have a 305 to put into it or can get one basically free, a 350 makes a lot more sense $'s/HP wise. I say this even though I've defended the 305 on many occasions (my sig should tell you that).

If you go for the 305, though, World Products S/R 305 Torquers would make a big difference. I'm even going one step farther and giving them a port & bowl cleanup job.

The Torker package may be a little more tweaky for daily driving than the Performer package, but it will give you the power you're looking for with the WP heads and a decent exhaust.

Why exactly are you going with a TH350? The TH700 is probably a better street tranny, even though it will cost you more to get than a TH350. If your current tranny is the dual-pattern type, it may even bolt up to the SBC.

BTW, in your original post you said "most HP i can expect": That sounded more like "an all-out drag car" than a beefed-up street ride. Hence the request for more info on exactly what you were looking for.

No flame intended.

The main reason I'm gonna go with the th-350 is the money issue. I can get one for free. Mine isn't the dual bolt pattern and it won't bolt to a SBC. I want the most HP that i can drive around and still be able to idle in traffic and PS and accessories. That's what I meant by a beefed up street ride. To me deleting A/C and PS etc would be MOST hp and kinda making it like a Pro Street car. Thanks for the help. BTW I can get a 305 from a friend, complete for 75 dollars. That's why i'm going with that.

In that case I would rebuild that 305, with a stout bottom end. Then buy a Performer package, or whatever, or Edelbrock's and drop it on! With that package and a good set of heads, and exhaust, you can expect to make around 350 HP. But with that tranny, you'll lose 20% easy getting to the rear. Just make sure you get a good stall converter, and lower gears to help you... Good luck with that. But I will say this, you can get a complete 350 from a junkyard for around 150. (At least I can) That would bump the HP up, with the same package, to over 400. And ALL of that power, is street-able.
