Motor Swap, etc. Idea Help
Motor Swap, etc. Idea Help
I've had my Camaro for almost 3 years. I've never really had the money to do any serious mods on it(I'm 18 I've never really had a real job). I was on the verge of selling it when I realized just how much potential it had. This made me fall in love all over again with my car, a 91 RS. I just need some help with my ideas.
1. I know I'll be swapping in a 355 or a 383.
2. I know I'll probably be investing in a Tremec TR-3550 5 speed and a tranny swap(it's an auto right now).
My question is about the rearend. I want a rearend good enough for strip action, but this car is also going to be my daily driver. Later down the road I want to upgrade to Baer four wheel disc brakes. This is also going to be a mainly junkyard project. I know some things will have to be new, but does the rearend? I know some of the earlier model Camaro's had 3.73 and 3.42 rearends. Would I have to convert these to posi and discs? I just need some good advice. Thanks

Stick with the stock 10 bolt till it blows then get a 12 bolt or 9-inch and never worry about it again (do the discs at the same time- it's easy to get the rear set up to handle discs when you order it). Unfortuately, those units are about $2000 ready-to-bolt-in and I can't afford one either, or I'd already have one under my 78 Malibu!
BTW- I NEVER use slicks and by origianl 1979 7.5" 10-bolt rear end has lasted 140K miles and hundreds of dragstrip passes behind both a 400 and a 383. Stay away from hard launches and it'll last forever.
Asd for the motor- you'll have to decide what to do about your TBI system. There are guys who run TBI on bigger/stronger motors than the original 305 but that's definitely the road lass traveled. There is a forum on this BB dedicated to performance TBI if you're interested.
Otherwise, swapping to a carb setup would be very easy. Or going to TPI would be possible, although a lot less simple.
