what should i know before looking for a new engine
I'm looking to but a new engine for my 1984 berlinetta camaro.. right now i have a 2.8l v6 i want to buy a 350 small block and turn it into a 383 stroker.. i want over 400hp close to 500hp
i heard a 4 noly main would be stronger ? are those common in trucks? i dont know how to tell if its a 4 bolt main besides asking? will i want a high compression ? i want it to rumble and im really just building this car for the race way.. I will have to be able to drive it to the track and run off of pump gas.. what size carb what kind of cam and crank and all the goodies should i get to have a well built engine.. i want it to take a beating be reliable.. i want to keep the price for the engine all said and done around $3500-5000 to be practical i can find complete engines that run for $200.00 to $400.00 what do i need to look for and ask that could potentially save me money? i will have it taking to get machined what size bores should i get if i want a high compression ratio ? and finally what kind of transmition would be good? i want something tough and that will take off!!! handle burn outs as i go trough tires alot.. i will have front line locks installed lol keep in mind i want to cruise in this car on nice days do road trips things of that nature but mostly for drag racing? thanks in advance guys !!

400 HP would be a huge jump over what you have now. 500 HP would be about twice as expensive as 400 HP.
400 HP wouldn't be hard for a 383. At least $3500-$4k, I'd say. Then another $4k to handle it (at least).

Re: what should i know before looking for a new engine
yea i figured that much... im planing on putting sfc's welded ones. NEW suspension, posi rear end... what gear ratio would be good... and what kind of transmition should i look for? i want a 4 bolt main but what should i look for when considering buying an engine block or running engine.. and what do i need to change or add to an engine if i want it to be a 383 stroker from a 350.. ? i need to know crank cam lifters springs push rods timing chain valves headers and all that what size bore and what not to get the most power ?? that will also bo strong and not break often!
