It really depends of what kind of setup you want. Also why not go with a 350 instead? AS far as the oil smell it could actually only be an oil leak.

how come everytime somebody talks about rebuilding a 305 with added power somone else ALWAYS says, "Why not go with a 350?" Its quite simple actually, because we already have a 305 block that we can use instead of having to buy another block first, then buying everything else for it. As soon as I have the money after everything else I do to my car, Im going to build up my 305 thats just sitting in the garage right now.
IROCME, I would say it would cost about 500 to 700 to rebuild the engine with a new cam. I know I remember seeing an add in Super Chevy for 305 rebuild kits for about 300(?), and a 335 stroker for about 500. a cam will range anywhere from 100 to 200, depends on what you want. let me know what you come up with because I plan on rebuilding mine this christmas.

Check the PCV valve, valve cover gaskets, and intake manifold gaskets first. That may be all there is to the cause of your oil smell.
If you replace the cam, you'll be doing the gaskets anyway. If you want power, check out my sig. I got some good deals on parts of it, but heads are about $650 assembled from Competition Products (makes a lot more sense to me than putting ANY money into stock heads, including a valve job); gaskets about $60-80 (use 350 gaskets with World heads, and you need the oil pan gasket for one-piece rear main seal); the ZZ4 cam is a bit pricey but Scoggin-Dickey was running a take-off special, and it would work nice with your combo (custom chip may be required, upgrade springs are a must), adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Any performance mod attempt is really silly without exhaust upgrades - headers ($350-500), dual or high-flow 3" cat ($100-300), 3" cat-back ($150-300).
