T5 swap
T5 swap
Ok, my evil plot to put a T5 in my car has taken yet another turn. I have found a new possible donor, this time a 85 trans am. He just built a carb'd vortech 350 and wants a muncie 4 speed to back it up, and will sell me the just rebuilt two or so months ago T5.
So anyway, what i was wondering is:
What parts would i need to pirate? (besides the obvious)
Would i need a new driveshaft?
Would the PROM need to be altered?
I know, not a real specific question, I've also posted this in the tranny board. But thanks up front to anyone with words of wisdom.

Next up: headers and gears

I have just done one of these swaps. The drive shaft will fit. As my car won't be running untill this weekened I am not 100% about the eprom but my reaserch has turned up that it should work fine. The starter for the auto is larger and won't fit into the T-5 bell houseing. You will have to rewire the switch that is attached to the auto shifter. You will need a switch and plug for the starter connetct on the clutch pedal and the wires will reach (with some creativity) to the pedal. I also drilled a small hole and just ran the backup switch through the floor to the T-5 tranny. Just a few things that weren't obvious to me. Hope this helps.
Yeah, thats exactly the kind of thing i was hoping to find out, thanks man. I'm still not 100% sure i'm gonna do this though. What i really wanna do is the 5 speed thing then convert to TPI (I have an entire system located), but then i got to thinking, for the amount of $$ and time/work it'd take, i could just sell my car and find one that already has the TPI/5 speed 305 or the L98 auto. I dunno yet, depends on the money situation next year.

here's my recipe and it is quite a p.i.t.a if the engne is in.take out the console first and formost do the wiring first that way when the tranny slips in it's ready to go.the black control box for the shifter wll have to come out, next the two reverse wires will have to be cut and extended to the tranny also there is a nuetral safety switch purple and yellow hat will have to be cut and extended or wired together depending if you want a the neutral safety switch on the pedals to work i just wired mine together. make sure the trans s in neutral or push the clutch in every time you want to start it.as for the starter it's the same size they only made one size for the 3rd gen.you'll need a template for the slave cylinder hole i used a 2 1/4 hole saw bit the actuating assembly can be put in but requires lots of twists and turns to get it in also do it from underneath.you'll also need the tourqe arm mount from a t-5 the auto's different as well as the exhaust hanger but the auto's will work.drive shaft is the same, and the auto prom will work fine.
