swapped motor need tranny advice

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this board, and I would appreciate some advice.

A friend of mine bought a 92 camaro RS. It had a 305 2V carburated engine (factory engine). The engine blew about 1500 miles after he bought it. (cracked block)

He bought a junkyard engine out of a 1990 chevy suburban. We thought it was a 305 2V, but the parts store guy said there were no 305's in chevy suburbans. There were only 350 2V's.

At any rate, the new engine is in the camaro, and it runs good. The problem is the transmission. The trans is the factory 3 speed automatic. With the new engine, it shifts into high gear at about 30 mph. At 50 mph, it doesn't want to shift down into passing gear. It just motors along, not fast but not slow either.

My questions.

1. Can the trans be adjusted to make better use of the truck engine? (modulator, band adjustment, etc.)

2. Is it better just to live with it as is?

Money is tight. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

It was my mistake. As an old guy, I reserve the right to get specifications screwed up. Us old guys, sheeesh.

The old engine and trans probably was original. I did'nt know that the factory automatic was a 4 speed. But the 305 that came out was carburated (1 single 2 bbl), and the chevy suburban engine that went in was also carburated (1 single 2 bbl).

I have not worked on cars in a long time. For all I know, automatic transmissions still have vacuum modulators. I really do appreciate the thought that the throttle valve cable may be out of adjustment. We will take a hard look at this, and see if we can make something happen.

But if the car has an automatic 4 speed, it should still have a passing gear at 50 MPH. The HP/torque ratings of the 2 engines are not very much different. We hope that the new engine is not too strong for the old transmission.

Thanks for your input. Any and all suggestions will greatly help.

Neither of those motors is carbed. They should both be TBI (throttl body injection) which looks rather like a carb but is not. It has an injector in each barrel that squirts fuel under pressure, with the injectors controlled by the computer; it doesn't use venturi vacuum produced by air velocity like a carb does.

The throttle valve cable is supposed to do the same thing as a vacuum modulator, i.e. tell the trans what kind of load the engine is under. IMHO it's an inferior system compared to a vacuum modulator, but they didn't ask me... oh well. To adjust it, there's a sort of D-shaped metal thing on the side of the cable housing where it goes through the bracket. Push it in, and slide the cable housing rearward as far as it will go while holding it in. Then let it go, and get in, and push the gas pedal to the floor. That's all there is to it.

The parts store guy is right, no 305s in the trucks, only 350s. Unfortunately they're not roller cam motors, which the RS's 305 was. Still it ought to run better than the 305 did.

Thanks fellas. This is really a great help. I think we will be OK with this.
I feel like an idiot though. I thought they were 2 bbl carbs. Oh well, I should get with the program a little more. What's that they say about "teaching old dogs".
Thanks again.
