383 Swap...Questions
383 Swap...Questions
Planning to swap in a 383/pro-jection combo into my 88 Camaro originally equipped with 305TBI auto trans.
1. I like the serpentine belt system. Will the new balancer fit the pully ? will the water pump fit the 383 ? If not, does anyone make a pump for serpentine system that fits the 383 ?
2. I want to keep the 700R4 trans. What flywheel will I need to mate the externally balanced 383 to the trans ?
3. Can I expect most/all/none of the acc. to mount up to the new heads ? I'm not sure about what heads I will be using yet, but they will not be the stock 305TBI heads.
4. How about hooking up the factory tach with the HEI type distributor I'll be installing ?
I've had this car since it was new. Bought it December 17, 1987 and drove it everyday since. I think after all this time, it's earned more than a stock rebuild.

Dont have all the answers but will help with what I can.
1. You shouldn't have any problems using your stock crank pulley. Same goes with the waterpump. If you want to get fancy I believe edelbrock makes an aluminum pump for 3rd gens. If you want to keep the serpentine system my advice is to make sure you use all of your stock brackets so that everything lines up correctly.
2. Is your new block a one-piece or two piece? I think it is the 168 tooth flywheel on the 700r4. If your using the older two-piece block I think you can get an auto-trans flywheel from a 400. Not sure on that.
3. You will have to check the bolt pattern on your heads and if possible try to get heads that match that pattern. I used ZZ4 heads. The passenter side head only has 2 accessory holes my old 305 heads had 3. Watch truck heads also. I had a set for an old project and the accessory holes were aligned differently than my car heads. (Dont remember what year truck)
4. Dunno
Hope some of this helps.

Everything should hook up ok, the only prob I could think of is in factory cars with the stock oil cooler, the 400 balancer hits the water pipe (because it's a whopping 8")
Use a 400 flexplate which is bigger but will work as long as you get the right starter.
