Swap Info
Swap Info
I plan on an engine swap from a 305 to a 350. I was told that I have to inform the inspection mechanic of this swap for emissions purposes. Is this true? And, is there any other information regarding a swap (I know I don't have to get a reconstructed title or anything like that) I should know about from an inspection/legal view point? Thanks for any replies.

Technically, that's true. The only legal 350 is one available in your year model or newer, with your configuration. If you have a 5 speed, for instance, there is no legal 350 because the factory never made one. But, you could take an '82 2.8l V6 car and put a '92 L98 in it as long as you put in ALL of the factory equipment used in a '92 L98 automatic, including the under-hood stickers.
In reality, if it looks right, they'll move on to the sniff test as if it is the stock 305 and use those standards.
As a point of reference, I put an '86 LG4 system in my '82 V6 car, using all of the '86 equipment including the stickers. When I go for a test, they enter the VIN and run it. They look under the hood, but I haven't seen them look up at the stickers, and there's no mention whatsoever on the test report that it is anything other than an '82 V6.

What are the "under-hood stickers?" That, and when you said "ALL factory equipment used in a '92 L98 automatic", you just mean all of the parts that connect the L98 to the 700R4, right? And, I will be able to keep the my VIN and all... just like you said? Thanks for any replies.

The stickers are emissions equipment info, typically one with data and one with vacuum routing, which are year-, model- and engine-specific. If you go for a later year style setup, you can get the appropriate stickers from the dealer. Some were on the radiator support, others on the hood by the latch. My '82 were on the support, the '86 on the hood.
By "all equipment", I mean a 350 TPI will have to have all of the 350 TPI equipment that came from the factory - A.I.R., EGR, cat convertor, ECM, etc. Or, CARB certified aftermarket replacements (like headers w/A.I.R. and O2 sensor).
Your VIN will not change no matter what you do to the drivetrain.

I plan on keeping the 84's carb and emissions equpiment. I'm not switching over to TPI. Therefore, I should be able to keep the stickers (I realize what they are now) and stuff right? The EGR and the rest of it from the carb should still work? I am going to by emissions headers and a cat-back exhaust, keeping the cat. Basically, I'm just switching blocks from the LG4 to the L98. The rest is staying the same, except headers and exhaust as mentioned.
