what are these canisters?

I am curious as to what the two canisters on the front driver's side of the engine compartment are. They sit on what looks like a battery tray. One I believe has something to do with the gas tank, with two lines going to it. The other is hooked up to the throttle cable. When the cable is retracted, the canister type thing moves in like a vacuum. I am preparing my engine compartment for a new 350 and these are in the way for cleaning. Are they necessary to re-install? What do they do? I greatly appreciate the help. Thanks

The big canister I believe is used to vent the gas tank. Its a charcoal canister used so you don't smell gas fumes when your idling. the othe thing your talking about that your throttle hooks up to is your cruise control.

Im dropping in a new 350 too and had the same question. By the sounds of it our cruise control can go.(Mine never worked anyway) But I think we should keep the charcoal vent canister unless we want to smell gas fumes in the city.

Dave

PS Is your 350 going to be carbed or EFI. I'm switching from TPI to a carb. What kinda questions are popping up in your head?
