A 302 is a 5 liter motor. I would belive that a 265,( the first small block V8) would be a 4.3 liter. That motor itself was a very bad design, comparing it to the modern small block. The 302 comes from a combination of a block with a 4" bore, and a 283 crank. Both the 283 and the 327 shared the small journals, as you probably already know. That's why creating an original 302 is so tough. But you can buy spacers that will make that crank work in a 350, or a large journal 327. But finding that 283 crank isn't easy.

its is designated the L99. 4.3L v8 in the B body Caprice cars. I guess the old people wanted a smooth v8 and not a 4.3L v6. They made it the same years(maybe a few less) as they made the LT1. That info should make it easier to find. The rods are 5.94" and match up with LT4 pistons (That's what the GM show car used)

That's right. That's the LT1 that was built in a 265 cid in memory of the first small block. I forgot about that one. I would think that if you wanted to use one of those cranks for a 302 build up, then you'd need to go with a 400 block. I'm just guessing here.

That crank in a 400 block gets you a 325 or 327 (I forget exactly). Put it in a 350 and you get a 302. 400 blocks are 2 piece rear seal and the L99 is 1 peicee so I don't know if you can do it. I gorget which the adapter lets you do.

get a used motor from the caprice 4.3L.you'll need an 86-later 350 engine block.since the deck heght was unchanged from the 3rd gen block to the 4th gen block i would think replacement parts like pistons(4.030 bore considering wear on the 350 core)rods will work.you may wanna go to 6.00 rods being that the piston will be easier to find in that configuration if money isn't a problem.as for the seal standard gm there.along with most everything else.a correction on a previous post chevy did make the 327 in a large journal(2.45) along wth the small journal(2.30).just a side note the 400 had 2.65 mains and putting that crank into the 400 would yeild roughly 326 cu.in.

Has any one tried destroking a 86+ 350 with the 4.3L crank? A modern day 302 that has all the roller cam machining already there. I wonder how it would run with a LT4 hot cam and some AFR heads. Also who makes the pistons for that setup.
