'83 305 to 350 carbed or TPI

Hey guys, I've been working on my '83 Z for a while now. I have a 350 carbed small block I have been slowly hammering away at, and wanting to drop it into my car.

This weekend I found and bought an 87 Iroc. I know what your thinking drop the 83, however the iroc while in decent condition is a police recovery and not legal to put back on the road, so the vin is toast.

I could also use as tranny replacement, and clutch is gone on the 83

So my question in your opinion should i put the carbed 350 in or what major problems would I run into doing a straight drivetrain swap from the Iroc?

Shouldn't be a problem either way. The '87 will be one-piece rear main seal, so the flywheel won't fit on an '85-earlier engine.

"Police recovery" means the car can't be registered? That's pretty weird.

yeah with the police recovery, it was vandalized windows broken and stuff stolen so they write the car off. So they only sell it to salvage yards and impounds. My father in law owns such a salvage yard.

If you want to 'rebuild' and put it back on the road, you have to keep it on the lot without any changes to it for 90 days and wait to see if the owner claims it, in which case he has to pay some money back or something.

After that you can then go and get the titles restored with the state(province actually) after an inspection.

is the process worth it? That's the question, but I have a solid body on my 83, except a few door hinges, stuff like that.

I was thinking about taking the full drive train, engine to axles just wondering how bolt in it will be or how much fabrication to make it fit

It should be all bolt in. There were some changes to wiring connectors, such as between the dash and rear chassis, but that shouldn't affect you. Brake lines went from SAE fittings to metric, but that shouldn't affect an engine/transmission swap.

Is the IROC carb or EFI? What all were you thinking of taking from the '87 to install in the '83?
